CHS starts strong, beats Aggies

Carrington got their 2022-23 girls' basketball season going on the right foot with a good first quarter defensively, and kept up the pressure to take an 18-point win in Velva Tuesday night, November 29.

In the 49-31 victory, the Cards hounded the Aggies into 31 turnovers though they committed 27 themselves, and maintained a healthy rebounding advantage to give themselves second-chance opportunities.

"We had good effort on the boards, and hit some shots from the arc to build and maintain the lead," said Head Coach Andy Braaten. "Because of all the turnovers, we'll be focusing in practice on ball handling and fighting through pressure."

Sophomore Edyn Hoornaert led CHS with 12 points. Haley Wolsky, a senior, finished with 10, and each of the Cardinal wing players hit a pair of threes in the win.

Senior center Emma Hone had a double-digit night on the glass with 10 rebounds to go along with eight points, and Madison Johnson scored all six of her points in the first quarter.

Hoornaert also secured eight rebounds and Johnson seven to help the Cards to a 40-26 positive margin in that category.

Isabel Wendel finished with four assists.

Velva was led by the Olivias, Miller and Passa, combining for 16 points and over half of the Aggies' total. No other player finished with more than four points.

Next up for the Cards is the annual Stutsman County Tournament, to be held at the Jamestown Civic Center December 8-10.
