Girls' wrestlers take 3rd in first tournament

The initial measuring stick for the nascent Carrington girls' wrestling program came at the Knights of Columbus Tournament at Jamestown High School's Jerry Meyer Arena Saturday, December 3.

And if finishing third place to a combined squad of the three West Fargo high schools and the Jamestown Blue Jays (both Class A programs) by just nine total points was any indicator, it was a smashing success.

The Cards scored 97 points at the K of C to outstride Des Lacs-Burlington in fourth and end the day as the best small school at the tournament.

Three CHS wrestlers won first place in their individual brackets.

Mercedes Lura took three pins and a major decision to finish with a 4-0 record at 120 pounds, while Khendra Garcia won all three of her matches by fall at 140 and Trisa Schroeder got four pins to win the 145-pound class.

At 115 pounds, Kylie Skadberg finished as the runner-up with a 3-1 record, as did Kennedy Wendel at 145 (her only loss coming to Schroeder) and Ashley Lindberg at 250.

Karlee Lesmann was second in the 155B bracket at 2-2, and Kenzie Jost won a match at 105 pounds to take third in her round robin division.

Carrington had several other wrestlers who were scratches, and hope to welcome back Taya Lura from an elbow injury that has sidelined her for the early part of the season.

The Cards hit the dual mats for the first time last Friday night when they took on Bismarck Legacy and South Border in the West Gym, and also participated in the girls' division of the Al Larson Tournament on Saturday.

On December 17, CHS is slated to travel to Wishek to compete in the South Border Tourney.
