The Official Newspaper for Foster County
Last year featured a bit of a learning curve for the Carrington Cardinals in a season just over .500 at 12-10, but four games in, this campaign already looks to be generating impressive returns from the team's young talent.
The CHS girls made good on an early season statement victory, pulling away from then sixth-ranked Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier and taking a 71-57 upset in the championship game of the Stutsman County Tournament Saturday, December 10, at the Jamestown Civic Center.
Carrington now sits at 4-0 on the season, and received votes in the latest Class B poll released last Tuesday morning.
Sticking with the explosive Rebels after one quarter and trailing by just one point at 14-13, the Cards overcame a slow start in the second quarter and got key baskets late in the half to lead by five, 25-20.
"After we beat their front line of full court pressure we finished some nice 2-on- 1 breaks at the end of their press," said Coach Andy Braaten. "We also had a great night of bench play too."
The aforementioned bench provided the decisive blow for the Cards' win. Junior Olivia Threadgold had both her outside and mid-range game going with two threes to finish with 12 points, and sophomore forward Kaydence VanRay got some looks in the paint and got to the foul line in her 11-point outing.
Much of the Rebel offense came inside in the first half. Junior center Grace Irey had 10 of her 14 points in the first and second quarters.
After just two points in the opening 16 minutes, junior sharpshooter Mataeya Mathern got going in the second. She would finish with 20 points.
All-Tournament selection Madison Johnson was a model of consistency at the Stutsman for Carrington, finishing with 44 points in the three games and 16 against E-K-M. She also finished with nine rebounds in the title game triumph.
Sophomore Edyn Hoorrnaert had 10 rebounds for CHS, and Isabel Wendel also was in double figures in the scoring column with 10 points and added six steals. The two were also All-Tournament honorees.
Braaten's club started the three days with a 57-17 win in round one over South Border on December 8, though the stat sheet showed some early struggles to get the ball in the basket.
Even shooting just 8-for-42 in the first half for a dismal 19 percent, the Cards hung their hat on their shutdown defense, and still enjoyed a 24-10 advantage at the half against the Mustangs.
"Our bench play added some good scoring balance," Braaten said. "We had a very cold start, but we forced some turnovers and got a lead."
VanRay had 12 points, and Kacie Rexin was just one point shy of double digits with nine.
Hoornaert and Wendel contributed to an overwhelming 54-26 edge on the boards for the Cards with 12 rebounds each.
South Border was led in scoring by Macy Monson and Kelsey Vetter, each with six points.
In the semifinals, Carrington took a big 60-33 win over the M-P-B Thunder. Johnson had 15 points, followed by Hoornaert's 13 and Wendel with 10.
Emma Hone pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, and Haley Wolsky had four steals in the win. VanRay owned the paint with two blocked shots.
"Following the first couple of minutes and getting over the top of some screens, our defense was solid all game," said Braaten.
M-P-B was led by Allison Thomas's 10 points, and Lilly Bohl had nine rebounds in defeat.
Thunder finish fourth
Over three days, the Thunder had an up-and-down experience, taking a big 53-29 win over Griggs/Midkota to start the tourney before two disappointing losses to Carrington and Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter (50-33) meant they would end their weekend in fourth place.
The Imperials' talented junior center, Teagan Erbele, had her way in the lane with 21 points and 13 rebounds in the third place contest.
M-P-B struggled from the floor, shooting 12-for-51 for just under 24 percent.
Lilly Bohl led the Thunder with nine points against N-G-S.
In round one, Thomas canned a trio of trifectas and forced seven steals for a game-high 21 points, followed by Bohl's 12-point, six-rebound and three-assist showing.
G-M was led by 16 points from Ryan Johnson in the first round. Vanessa Vollmer had five rebounds and three steals to go along with six points.
Thomas and Bohl were selected to the All-Tournament Team for the Thunder following play.
Titans have several near misses, finish 0-3
A few plays here and there, and the weekend would have had a much better feeling than eighth place for the Titans.
Consolation round and seventh place games were decided by a total of three points, both coming out on the losing end for G-M as they fell to South Border, 53-51, on Friday and took a tough one-point loss to Warwick, 55-54, on Saturday.
Vollmer was one rebound shy of a double-double in the loss to the Mustangs, ending up with 14 points and nine boards. Lauryn Halvorson finished with 10 points, three steals and two assists, and Bailey Ehlers had nine tallies.
South Border had three players hit double figures, led by Macy Monson's 17. Emily Jochim had a 12-point, 14-rebound double-double and Eva Meyer 10 more points.
In seventh place play, the Lady Warriors' Madison Cavanaugh went off for 30 points to help Warwick overcome a nine-point deficit after the third quarter and keep the Titans out of the win column in what would have been G-M's first victory.
Kaylee Johnson led the Titans with 16 points, and Halvorson was close behind with 14.
After tourney play, Carrington sits at 4-0, M-P-B is 3-2 and Griggs/Midkota 0-5 on the young season.
