From the Past: Fredrickson named Coach of the Year

75 Years Ago

December 25, 1947

Publication of a Carrington publicity pamphlet in January is one of the projects of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, members of which studied a draft of the pamphlet at a meeting of the organization last Thursday evening.

With a loss and a win thus far in the season the combined Veterans independent basketball team has ten more home games scheduled, the next scheduled game being against Jamestown here. The first game was lost to McHenry 38 to 33, but the Vets copped a victory a week ago Tuesday by taking Pingree 37-33.

The following letters to Santa are from area children.

Dear Santa, I am in the third grade, I am a good boy. I want a electric train and I want some tracks too. And bring something for my brother, Alvin Baker. And some candy and some nuts. Gene Baker, Edmunds.

Dear Santa, I am six years old. I go to school. I am in the first grade. Please bring me some candy and nuts. I want you to bring a doll and some red dishes. Ellen Goter, Sykeston.

Dear Santa, Will you please bring me a catapillar and a paint set. My sister wants a car and some peanuts. If you have some left. I am in the 3rd grade. Hope you won’t miss us children. Thank you. Your friends, Darlene and Wayne Reisnour, Carrington.

Recent births at Carrington Hospital include: December 18, a girl born to Mr. and Mrs. Edward College and a girl to Mr. and Mrs. Schatza, Bordulac. December 20, a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lester Swart, Heaton and on December 21, a boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Johnson, Kensal.

At Trinity Lutheran Church on Sun., Dec. 21, at 2;30, Miss Inez Elaine Miller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry H. Miller, became the bride of Robert Francis McCrea, son of Mr. and Mrs. James McCrea.

50 Years Ago

December 27, 1972

Foster County Farmers Union Senior Youth presented their Torchbearer awards to Deborah Hallwachs and Ann Montgomery during the 46th annual N.D. Farmers union convention held in Bismarck.

Foster County ASCS community committeemen re-elected Herman Delfs of McHenry to a three year term as a regular member of the county committee, elected first and second alternates respectively were Alf Stangeland, Glenfield and Ted Taylor, Carrington. Francis Aljets, Carrington, was again elected chairman of the county committee, Russell Zink, Bordulac, was voted vice chairman.

Dorothy Zeller was among the more than 60 graduates when Concordia College held winter commencement ceremonies Dec. 20. She received the degree of B.A. in business education.

Edith Bjorke, a former Carrington resident now of Gwinner, received a B.A. Cum Laude in Business Education.

Jim Fredrickson, athletic coach at New Rockford High School, was named the state 1972 Cross-Country Coach-of-the-Year for having coached the New Rockford Rockets long distance runners to the first state championship in the history of the school.

Several area students were among the more than 200 who participated when NDSU and North High School of Fargo presented a Christmas concert Dec. 17 in Festival Hall at NDSU.

Robert Delfs of Binford performed in the brass ensemble while Alice Long and Cathy Lund of Bowdon, Cheryl Nogosek of Kensal and Paulette Brown of Sykeston took part in the chorus.

Ron Swart and Miss Masako Koyonagi were married Dec. 19 in Sasebo, Japan. Parents are Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Swart, Carrington, and Mr. and Mrs. Gisaku Koyonagi of Fukuoka City, Japan.

New Year’s Eve Dance at the Carrington Armory music by Bert Gray and the Rounders.

Another Carrington landmark went down early this week as the Cass-Clay building was razed. Records were found in the building that dated back to the early 1930’s.

December 29, 1997

Caroline Wolf retires from R/E Center after 15 years of service. Caroline cleaned and weighed grain, she also worked through a yearly cycle of germination, seed packaging, and preparing for a new planting season.

Robert Volk and Ron Larson of Carrington, each picked up $500, “Stash of Cash”, bundles during the final drawing of the season.

Gail Kollman, food court manager at Super Valu, Carrington, won second place in a national baking contest that required entries in seven theme categories. The Carrington store placed first in the Mexican and English divisions, and honorable mention in French, Traditional, Italian and German.

Carrington’s Super Valu was one of nine stores nationwide running for the top prizes.

Jared Hallwach, age 4, was the winner of the giant Christmas stocking given away Dec. 19 at Cenex C-Store. He is the son of Lynnette and Bryon Hallwachs.

Area births - Abigail Renae Flemmer was born December 5, 1997, at the Jamestown Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs., 11 oz. Her parents are Lynn and Karen Flemmer, Carrington.

Allan Metzger, administrator, placed a leaf on the tree of life, a project of the Golden Acres Manor Foundation. The tree is in the lobby of Golden Acres. Gifts are given in memory of friends or relatives with names placed on the leaves. The Foundation was formed to help with special projects of the Carrington nursing home, including equipment and furnishings.

CHS students of the month for November - Jessica Kubal, grade 8; Matt Metzger, grade 11; Tammy Cabler, grade 9; Jenni Short, grade 10; and Suzie Lura, grade 12.

The 10 finalists competing in the national Geography Bee at Carrington elementary School Friday, Dec. 12 were 6th graders Phillip Zink and Brock Gussiaas; 7th graders Billy Peterson and Nikki Schroeder and 8th graders Matt Swanson, Elie Gardner, Samantha Larson, Samantha Wede, Micah Frost and Tyler Carr.
