The Official Newspaper for Foster County
Almost half a week's worth of being stuck in their houses, while over two feet of snow dumped on the state in some places, made the Carrington Cardinal basketball teams more than a bit stir crazy.
The release of that pent-up energy showed in a Saturday, December 17, matinee doubleheader in the East Gym with nonregion opponent Benson County.
CHS' girls started the afternoon with a 64-13 rout over the Wildcats to improve to 5-0 on the season, and the boys won their second game in as many outings, defeating BC by a tally of 76-43.
In the girls' game, the Cards took a 13-5 lead after one quarter, before blowing the doors off the Cats in the next two periods with 40 of the next 43 points.
Kacie Rexin led Carrington's customary balanced score sheet with 13 points, including three-pointers on three different trips down the floor. Rexin would also add four assists to lead the Cards.
Also in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively, were Madison Johnson and Olivia Threadgold. The latter finished one rebound shy of a double-double with nine, followed by Emma Hone with six boards.
Isabel Wendel scored seven points and led CHS with five steals.
Only four players scored for the Wildcats (2-3), and three of those, Aubrey Kenner, Kaitlyn Maddock and Kale Williams, shared tri-leader honors with four points each.
The boys' game featured spirited up-and-down action from both the Cards and 'Cats early, but the home team took a 20-14 advantage into the first quarter break. In the second eight minutes, it was all Carrington, outscoring BC by a 20-4 margin to lead by 22 at the half.
Senior Hudson Schmitz was on fire from the floor, hitting 12-of-16 (2-of-3 from three-point range) for a game-high 27 points.
Jack Erickson continued his fast start to his own senior campaign with 14 points (7-for-11). Contributing 12 points more was sophomore guard Josh Bickett, and junior Grady Shipman had 10 points, six steals and five assists for the Cards in the win.
Carrington had a 34-20 edge on the glass, of which a team-high nine rebounds were snared by McCoy Beckley.
The Wildcat boys fell to 0-2 with the loss, and were led in scoring by Lane Benson's 13 points. Paxton Neppl finished with eight.
