In a fast sharp shooting game, the Carrington Cardinals edged the Maddock Aggies 44-36 on the local floor Wednesday evening, Jan. 7.
A former resident near Courtenay, Mrs. Eva Schrade, 71, died Friday of last week in a Minneapolis hospital. Funeral services were held in Minneapolis Tuesday.
Collection of clothing for the Fort Totten Indians, is a project of the Carrington Grade School, it was announced this week by Mrs. Mary Ruck, grade school principal. She asked that an appeal for cooperation of the public be made through the Independent.
Election of officers took place at the annual business meeting of the Carrington Fire Department Monday night, when annual reports were also made and plans for the year were discussed. C.W. Yoder was elected assistant chief to succeed Alger O’Leary; J.L. Polries was named secretary-treasurer to succeed A.H. Ebentier, and Frank Brown, a trustee for 20 years, was re-elected for a three-year term. Three new members were introduced at the meeting.; John Lofland, Claude Franke and James Moberg.
Mrs. Harry Darland, widow of a former Carrington publisher, died December 26 in the home of her son John in Seattle, where she was visiting.
What is believed to be a record price paid for cattle locally, was received by Wm. Hertel of Glacier township, Stutsman County, who sold 10 head of cattle, weighing 10,290 pounds, to Fern and William Galt, at 30 cents per pound. The sale netted Mr. Hertel, $3,177.00. Earlier this season Mr. Hertel sold to these same buyers 17 cows and heifers for $3,600.
Included among business establishments of North Dakota recently fused into a single, closed cooperative corporation is the Square Deal Furniture store of Carrington, of which George Smutzler is manager.

A former Carrington man, Roger W. Young, was elected president of Minnesota Chamber of Commerce executives at the organization’s 54 annual meeting in St. Paul.
Carrington firemen re-elected Forrest Bold chief of the local department in balloting Jan. 8. Also returning to their offices were James Dunn and Ken Englestad as first assistant and secretary-treasurer respectively.
The Carrington junior high squad won a dual wrestling match from Jamestown by 50 to 19, January 13, in Carrington. Individual match winners for CHS were Randy Lura, Jim Harmon, Don Caylor, Paul Straley, Ray Haman, Kelly Lund, Tom Zink, Dave Kling, Pat Copenhaver and Robert Kile, Pete Gudmundson gained a win by forfeit.
Carrington’s season record in high school basketball sagged to 2-8 during the past week as Fessenden, New Rockford and Rugby, hung losses on the Cardinals.
Mrs. W.A. Rosenau was installed worthy matron of Ruth Chapter, order of Eastern Star at a public installation ceremony Jan. 10 at the Masonic Hall. Other elective officers are: Andy Heinitz, Worthy Patron; Agnes Meadows, Associate Patron; Elaine Caylor, secretary; Arvilla Tenborg, treasurer; Nora Paulson, conductress; Betty Bold, associate conductress.
Nobody is going to feel a chill due to the fuel oil shortage. All five dealers said they have sufficient fuel oil available to take care of their customers, but are concerned about a possible critical situation should a lengthy cold spell follow the current balmy January. All dealers have been barred from taking on new customers in order to insure that current customers will have fuel.

Dakota Growers is one of the biggest pasta plants and worlds only grower-owned plant, now that it has entered into an agreement with Primo Platto of New Hope, Minnesota. Primo Platto became wholly owned and a subsidiary of Dakota Growers Pastas Company.
One of the newest at Dakota Growers plant is the automated packaging machine in the new addition. A seventh production line of pasta will be added this summer to fill the plant.
Al Larson, Carrington School administrator will retire at the end of the school year. He has been in the Carrington School system for 33 years as the high school principal.
Area births - Sara Elizabeth Myers, daughter of Rick and Ronda Myers, December 26, 7 lbs. 15 oz.
Taeya Rose was the first baby born in the new year at Carrington Health Center, Jan. 14, 1998. Taeya is the daughter of Rebecca Two Hearts and Tim Thomas of Fort Totten.
Lonnie Suckut was chosen Carrington’s new fire chief. Suckut said his major focus will be completing fund raising activities for the new fire hall.
Chris Liberda and Mike Skadberg were named “”Wrestlers of the Week” by the coaches following their performances on the mat. Friday night roller skating at the armory will be suspended while the renovation project gets underway. The new Sport Court floor was not ordered before the end of the year as planned.
