M-P-B runners-up at SCT; Cards defeat G-M for fifth

If the Ellendale Cardinals shoot like they did at this year’s Stutsman County Tournament, there most likely won’t be a Region 3 program that can hang with them come postseason time.

The back-to-back tournament title-winners made it a three-peat with a 69-52 win over the M-P-B Thunder Saturday night, January 7, at the Jamestown Civic Center, on the strength of 11 three-pointers.

And that wasn’t even their best long-range shooting night of the tourney, as EHS drained 14 trifectas in a 72-47 win over South Border in the semifinals. Over the three days, Coach Brian Vance’s Cardinals hit 31 long balls, and are now 7-0 and ranked #8 in the latest Class B boys poll.

M-P-B persevered with two hard-fought wins in the first two rounds, a 45-39 come-from-behind win over Griggs/Midkota on Thursday, and a 46-36 win against Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier Friday night to advance to the title shot.

In other performances from local teams, Carrington weathered a disappointing 50-39 loss to South Border in the opening round, and rebounded to take wins of 54-25 against Kidder County and 55-44 at the Titans’ expense in the consolation championship.

Griggs/Midkota’s one win at the Stutsman tourney came against Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter, a 51-45 Friday win in the consolation bracket.
