From the Past: Carrington boxers won against Harvey

75 Years Ago

February 5, 1948

With the opening of the new semester in Carrington High School, two new teachers were on the faculty, replacing two who resigned. Mrs. Benard Schroeder, a former grade teacher, replaced Mrs. Mervin Nelson, Carrington, who resigned, and Miss Jean Bjerke of Valley City came here to take the place of Mrs. James Bronaugh, who resigned and is now living at Glenfield.

A.R. Suckut of Carrington and Lawrence Utke of Glenfield, members of the board of supervisors of the Foster County Soil Conservation District, are in Bismarck this week attending sessions of the state association of Soil Conservation District supervisors.

E.L. Beaty, past Grand Master of the IOOF Lodge, has been named district deputy Grand Master for District No. 16. The local IOOF Lodge is active here, holding weekly meetings on Thursday nights at Beaty’s store.

A former Carrington citizen and one of the donors of the Hawks Nest for Boy Scouts and recreation purposes, Mrs. Errett Calderwood, niece and heir of the late Thomas Baker, was featured as the Successful Farming’s “good neighbor” for February.

In a conference game at Minnewaukan, the Carrington Cardinals defeated the hapless Minnewaukan team 42-14. Twelve men saw action for the Cardinals.

Carrington’s boxers won a return match here last Wednesday night against Harvey, winning four of six bouts. Next week the local boxers will go to Velva for exhibition bouts, and on Feb. 21 they will meet Valley City boxers here.

Outcome of the bouts against Harvey is as follows: B. Martinson decisioned Stock; Ableidinger TKO’d Stafford; Pfeiffer won by TKO over Loken; Perkins won the decision over Sorenson; Short bested Heisler and Gread-Singer won over Morgan by a decision.

Harvey winners were: Martin, winner over Wetzstein, and Lund winner over Fornshell.

50 Years Ago

February 7, 1973

Six individual championships fell to Carrington as coach Al Larson’s middle weight wrestlers led the charge that upset favored Valley City for the North Star Conference team title. Gaining championships for the Cards were Heiden, Hagel, Dan Zink, Virgil Purcell, Joel Hjelseth and Mike Vogelwede.

Retired Bordulac rural mail carrier Hormer Grove was honored by his former route patrons and neighbors at a retirement party. He made his last trip on the rural route, Jan. 5.

Coach Pete Kostelecky’s junior high wrestlers ended their season with a second place finish at the Jamestown invitational tournament. Placing first were Randy Lura, Don Caylor and Ray Haman. Second place finishers were Jim Harmon, Tom Zink, Dave Kling and Pat Copenhaver.

Four Carrington students are listed on the first semester Dean’s list from Concordia College. They are Debra Gussiaas, Donald Gussiaas, Gregg Held and Dorothy Zeller.

Cousins were elected royalty at the annual Snow Ball held by the junior class of Sykeston High School in honor of seniors. Named Queen was Jane Neumiller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Neumiller, and King was Donald, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Neumiller.

Mrs. Elizabeth Bechtold of the English and counseling department at Carrington High School has been named to lead a group of area students and adults on a five week program of students and travel in Europe next summer.

Mr. and Mrs. Dale Pretzer of Carrington announce the engagement of their daughter Vickie Lee, to Dennis Lee Quast, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Quast of Ellendale. A June wedding is planned.

Mr. and Mrs. Roman Malinski announce the engagement of their daughter Helen to Dr. Barlett Eriksen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bjerge Eriksen of Kensal.

February 9, 1998

Cannon Technologies expand to a development center which manufacture and market technological equipment for electric companies with their main customers being the rural co-ops, including Northern Plains Electric in Carrington. The company will hire two new employees. The new office will be the former All Sports building along Highway 281.

John Zietz, manager at Cargill, Inc., Carrington, has accepted a new position at the Cargill facility at Lakota, N.D. Replacing Zietz will be Ron Hanson who will move here from another Cargill location in Bloomingburg, Ohio where he was manager.

A new program called “School-to-Work” is coming to the Carrington School District. School-To-Work is made up of mentoring, job shadowing, youth apprenticeships, cooperative education and work experience.

Several Wells County communities were part of a string of burglaries that occurred at the end of January. Stadies Standard in Bowdon, Bowdon Locker and Grocery and the Bowdon Café. Fessenden was the next target having stolen from the Main Street Café. Sheriff Curtis Pellet estimated that the burglaries would have taken place between 2 and 5 a.m. within several nights.

Rose Garden Floral is offering singing Valentines this year for Valentines Day. A choice of five “nostalgic” songs are on the lineup, and a bouquet of flowers goes with the singing Valentine. The song choices are, “It Had To Be You”, “Cuddle Up A Little Closer,” “You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby,” “You Do Something to Me” and “Pretty Baby”, Delivering the songs will be Lois Clark of Carrington, with taped accompaniment by Kelli Helton.

Area Births - boy, Cole Douglas Ferguson, born Jan. 28, 7 lbs. 10.4 oz, at Carrington Health Center, parents are Bobbi Jo and Douglas Ferguson, girl, Islin Rose, January 29, to Jim and Carla Hardy. She weighed 8 lbs. 15 oz.

Playing at the Carrington Youth Center in Carrington, Disney’s “Mr. Magoo” starring Leslie Nielsen.

Melissa Montgomery has been chosen locally to represent Carrington High School in the All American Vocational Students Awards program. A panel convenes in each of the 50 states to select the state winners.
