Quick 10-0 start vaults #6 Shiloh over CHS

A familiar face enveloped in her now-trademark rugby headgear met up again with the Carrington Cardinals.

Shiloh Christian senior All-State forward Hailey Quam, two years removed from facing the Cards in the 2021 State B Tournament as a member of the Wilton-Wing Miners, brought her Skyhawks into battle once again with the team in red and white Saturday, February 4.

SCS, the sixth-ranked team in Class B at 15-2 coming into their game with Carrington, made full use of 16 points from Quam in a 66-55 win in Bismarck.

Had they not spotted Shiloh a big lead early, Coach Andy Braaten's charges played fairly evenly with the 'Hawks.

"Shiloh pressed us into five turnovers in the first two-and-a-half minutes, and got up 10-0 early," said Braaten. "After that beginning, the girls worked hard and stayed focused."

In that first quarter, where the Skyhawks finished with a 20-8 lead, Quam, along with Dedra Wood, each scored six points.

The shooting of the Skyhawks' Emily Hammeren also played a factor in keeping the Cards from making a run. Hammeren hit a three in the first quarter, along with two more in the second, and finished with 10 points.

Shiloh senior Hannah Westin also added 12 points in the win for the Region 5 powers.

At the top of the Cards' scoring sheet were Madison Johnson and Kacie Rexin, each with 15 points. Close behind was Haley Wolsky with 14, all of those coming in the second half.

Johnson had eight rebounds and Rexin six, both trailing team leader Isabel Wendel's nine. Johnson also finished with three assists and Wolsky three steals.

"We had great effort on the offensive boards and getting to the free-throw line," said Braaten.

The Cards had plenty of opportunities from the stripe, finishing with 20-of-30 for the game for 66.7 percent.

Carrington (15-4) finished their regular season with a 62-30 win over HWC (see Lane Moellenkamp's article on page 9). They earned a first-round bye at the District 5 Tournament which started on Friday, February 10, in Jamestown.
