Books & Bits: Meet the Carrington Library Board

The job of the Carrington City Library Board of Trustees is “to provide the patrons of the library with effective public library service by helping fulfill the mission of the Carrington City Library” (Board by-laws). The 2023 Board is comprised of five community leaders with varied backgrounds but a common commitment to providing a strong, vibrant library in our community.

Following is a brief introduction to the current trustees.

Robin Simonson is the current Board president. Robin and her husband, Brock, moved to Carrington nearly fifteen years ago. She currently works at Foster County Public Health. Robin says, “Ever since our two kids, Howie (11) and Caroline (9), were little, we have loved to come to the library. Books and reading are a big part of our lives, and our library does an excellent job of offering all kinds of programs and activities. The book club has been something I’ve enjoyed joining this year.”

Cathy Paulson returns for another year as the Board vice-president. Cathy has lived in Carrington for 65 years during which she taught special education at the grade school for 39 years. Cathy says, “Reading is a lifelong hobby. I belong to two book clubs. Another hobby is working at the Foster County Museum.” Cathy and her husband also enjoy attending activities of their 28 grandchildren.

Nancy Boehmer has been the Board secretary for several years. Nancy has lived in Carrington for 22 years. She retired to Carrington after teaching for 30 years in a variety of places, including Alaska. Her strong commitment to our library stems from a childhood devoted to reading. She says, “I’ve always been a library member since I was a child. My mom used to get boxes of books from the State Library when we lived in the country.”

Susie Krause is the fourth board member. She and her husband Rick moved to Carrington five years ago to be closer to family (son, daughter-in-law, and grandsons). She watched her grandsons the first three years after she retired. “We came to the library two or three times a week,” which is when she really came to support the role of the library. Susie also enjoys playing cards with friends and family and bowling. She volunteers with the youth bowling program. “I love Carrington!”

Barb Page is the newest Board member, joining the Trustees in January 2023. Barb is a lifelong resident of Carrington and a lifelong book reader. She worked at the post office for 43 years, retiring about seven years ago. She says, “Besides reading, I like to sew baby blankets for my great-grandkids – seven so far.” After living in the country for 20 years, Barb and her husband moved back into town and love it.

Trustees must be residents of the City of Carrington, in accordance with North Dakota Century Code. Trustees are eligible to serve for two three-year terms. As Trustees do not receive compensation, their willingness to volunteer their time stems entirely from a commitment to the library and the services it can provide to the community. Their leadership and support are critically important to the success of the Carrington City Library.
