From the Past: Berdahl named Agent of the Year

75 Years Ago

February 19, 1948

The season’s worst storm hit Carrington at 9 p.m. Wednesday, when snow began falling and the wind blew at 50 or more miles per hour. Before the snow came a heavy rain fell. The wind came up suddenly and with flurry. Thursday morning, the storm was still at its height. Highway travel was impossible.

Betty Turner, Carrington High School senior, who was selected as the DAR pilgrim from Carrington this year, placed third in state competition. It was announced by state DAR headquarters, Miss Turner is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Turner, Heaton.

Construction of a new warehouse 40 feet by 100 feet by the Osborne-McMillan Elevator Company will begin soon. Work men are now tearing down the old Graves building on first street south, the site of the new structure.

Snow blocked roads are no hindrance to Mrs. L.G. Noraker, who is a teacher in a Wyard Township rural school, and who makes the trip to the school every day. Recently she has not been able to use the car, but she gets there every day. She has engaged Kenny Kadoun, local aviator, to take her to and from the school. A field near the school provides adequate land and take off field.

Bordulac girls, defending champions, came through to defeat a highly favored McHenry team by a score of 30 to 23 in the Foster County and Sub-District 1 playoff on the McHenry floor Saturday night, Feb. 14.

An open house, honoring Miss Gladys Thompson, on her birthday anniversary, was held at the Kensal Methodist church parlors Sunday, under auspices of the Women’s Society for Christian Service of that church.

Recent births at Carrington Hospital include: Feb. 12, a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Busch, Carrington. On Feb. 16, a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Earl Purcell, Edmunds and on Feb. 18, a boy was born to Dr. and Mrs. R. F. Gilliland, Carrington.

February 21, 1973

Carrington joined big league company Saturday as the wrestling Cardinals emerged as one of four regional team champions in the state. Coach Al Larson scored his seventh regional title as his squad held off a strong challenge from Grand Forks Central to win by 1½ points.

Rhonda Kahl is the Foster County winner in the “Know Your State” high school contest conducted by University of N.D. with prizes furnished by Masonic Grand Lodge of North Dakota.

Three members of Dakota Central Rural Telephone cooperative’s board of directors are currently in Washington, D.C., attending the national convention of telephone cooperatives. They are Mrs. Marie Stedman, Grace City; Andrew Headland, Ypsilanti; and Maynard Jablonski, Medina.

Ricky Gulstad, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Gulstad of Glenfield, N.D. is the 1973 N.D. State champion of the Elks’ Hoop Shoot free throw contest in the 12 and 13 year old age group.

Jerome Schroeder won honors in the 47th Little International Feb.12 at NDSU.

Two students from Carrington and two from nearby communities have been named to the President’s Roll of Honor at University of N.D. in recognition of academic excellence. Listed from Carrington are Jane Voglewede and Steve Watson, from Sykeston, Kathleen Schadewald; Bowdon, Charles DuBourt.

Mr. and Mrs. Sherman Sylling, Sr., of Carrington, announce the engagement of their daughter Barbara Lynn, to Larry Strecker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Strecker, Sand Lake , Mich.

February 23, 1998

Sue Backe and Brad Turner, First American Bank employees were named the 1997 Premier Performers by the Bremer Financial Corporation’s Premier Performer program. Turner, marketing manager in Carrington won for referrals, while Backer, an employee at the Kensal station, won in the sales category.

Kathleen Berdahl, Carrington District Representative for Modern Woodmen of America, was named the 1997 Agent of the Year at the Irion Agency Awards Banquet held recently in Fargo. Berdahl represents the Franks District of the Fraternal Life Insurance Society with her office located on Main Street, Carrington.

Lottie Graham, who turns 100 this year, and Louis Klimek, 91, were chosen Valentine royalty at Carrington Health Center Long Term Care. Residents vote on the honored king and queen, who were crowned at the Valentine’s Party, Feb. 13.

Dakota Clinic West Fargo has added optometry services. Dr. Edwin Tuhy has joined the facility. He is a native of Carrington, N.D. and lives in Fargo with his wife, Mary and two children.

Area births - David and Joan Copenhaver, Carrington, boy, Jacob David, born Feb. 16, 1998. 10 pounds, 5 ounces. Peggy Guthmiller and Ron Dockter of Carrington, girl, Sydney Marie Dockter, born Feb. 16, at Carrington Health Center, 7 pounds, 4.8 ounces.

Four Carrington gymnasts, Adriana Friezen, Heidi Hoffman, Tony Schmid and Danita Edland, were members of the Jamestown competitive club which participated in the State Competitive meet in Wahpeton on Feb. 8. Edland placed first in the 12 year olds, Hoffman second in the 11 year olds, Friezen third in the 12 year olds and Schmid seventh in the 10 year old class.

Cargill of Carrington has pledged $5,000 to the Armory remodeling project which is currently underway.
