Loboes upset CHS in double overtime in semifinals

Not to be harsh, but one could have built a sturdy mortar-bonded structure with the offerings Carrington was tossing up at the foul line and from the field in their District 5 semifinal against LaMoure/Litchville-Marion.

The Cards hit barely over 25 percent of their free throws at 5-for-19, and empty-handed possessions in regulation and in the two overtime periods led to a 48-44 loss to the Loboes Saturday night, February 11, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

"Our shooting struggles, especially late, provided L-L-M with an opportunity, and to their credit, they took it," said CHS Head Coach Andy Braaten. "Our girls gave great effort defensively, but we couldn't overcome the low field goal and free throw percentages."

Following a low-scoring first quarter, one which the Loboes took by a 7-6 advantage, the Cards got two straight threes in back-to-back possessions by Olivia Threadgold, and rode that momentary wave to a 23-15 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, freshman phenom forward Norah DelaBarre got going for the Loboes inside. DelaBarre would finish with 12 points, much of them in a third quarter where L-L-M retook the lead, 35-34.

Tessa Rasmusson had her struggles from the field too, notably shooting 14 three-point attempts, but her three makes from the arc, along with four other field goals, allowed her to have a 20-point evening for the Loboes.

Rasmusson hit the big shot of the game with just over 27 seconds to go, a game-tying three-pointer to knot the score at 42-42. A turnover on the ensuing possession for the Cards gave the Loboes another opportunity, but a long pass downcourt to DelaBarre resulted in a big defensive play by Emma Hone to stifle the attempted shot and force overtime.

Each team scored just once in the first extra session, but the Loboes scored all four points in the second four minutes of play to finish the upset.

Madison Johnson led the Cards with 15 points, but 13 of those were in the first half. Threadgold did her part with 12 points, all on threes, and all seeming to come at crucial points for CHS.

Haley Wolsky had seven points before fouling out, and she was co-leader with Hone on the boards with eight.

Johnson led Carrington with six steals, four assists and two blocked shots.

Coming into the game, the Cards were already short-handed with the unfortunate season-ending injury to Edyn Hoornaert. The sophomore forward, later honored as an All-District 5 player at the conclusion of the tourney, broke her left hand before the start of the tournament.

Her absence on both the offensive and defensive ends, especially in rebounding, showed itself in one particular stat.

DelaBarre, along with Georgia Lettenmaier, corraled 31 rebounds in the game for the Loboes, with the former grabbing 18 on her own. Eight of those boards were offensive.

L-L-M (11-10) tried to ride that momentum into the championship game, and had a first-half lead on the E-K-M Rebels before the Rebs righted the ship and took a 48-32 win for the title.

Carrington (15-5) dropped down to the Region 3 qualifier, and took on Griggs/Midkota (3-17) for the right to keep their season going.
