Mat girls earn 10 berths at GFRR

Grand Forks' Red River High School hosted the East Region Girls' Wrestling Tournament, and Carrington did quite well against athletes from both Class A and B divisions.

The Cards took home fifth place Friday, February 10, with a total of 127 points, and had a total of 10 qualifiers by virtue of wrestlers finishing in the top eight of their weight classes.

Central Cass, the region dual champs, repeated their win in the individual event with 224 points, followed by the Fargo Stingers with 194 in second. South Border (136) was third and the Grand Forks Knightriders co-op finished six points ahead of the Cards with 133.

The top individual finisher was freshman Khendra Garcia, who took second at 140 pounds and fell to nationally-ranked Allyssa Johnson (40-0 on the season) of the Knightriders in the finals.

Third place spots on the podium went to sophomore Mercedes Lura at 120 pounds and Trisa Schroeder, a senior, at 145. Kennedy Wendel (135) and Ashley Lindberg (250) also qualified by taking fourth.

Other qualifiers for the Cards were:

Fifth place - Karlee Lesmann, 155

Sixth place - Taya Lura, 105; Kylie Skadberg, 115

Seventh place - Madalina Ciubotareanu, 130

Eighth place - Kendall Kovar, 125

Though she finished sixth, Taya Lura suffered a season-ending elbow injury at the East Region tourney, and will be replaced by teammate Kenzie Jost in the 105-pound bracket.

Four Cardinal wrestlers earned seeds in the state individual tournament, which was held this past Thursday and Friday at the Fargodome.

Schroeder is the number three seed at 145, followed by Mercedes Lura (#6, 120), Wendel (#7, 135) and Garcia (#7, 140).
