Armed with the knowledge that they stood toe-to-toe with other pioneers of the sport in North Dakota and proved that they belong, the Carrington girls' wrestlers finished the first part of their three-day stay in Fargo with their heads held high.
The Cards earned a top-10 showing with 71.5 points, riding the efforts of four placewinners and eight point-scorers in the second State Individual Girls' Tournament.
Senior Kennedy Wendel led the way with a third-place plaque at 135 pounds. Wendel lost only to the eventual state champion, Valley City's Mylee Christianson, by 5-1 decision, and racked up two pins, a 17-0 technical fall, another 11-6 win and a 5-3 win over Jeanie Keller of South Border in the podium battle. She would finish an impressive 29-13 for the season.
At 145, Trisa Schroeder nearly became the Cards' first state title match participant, losing a 4-3 heartbreaker to champion Gracia Rolf of Lisbon in the semifinals. Schroeder defeated Rolf earlier in the year.
Schroeder would place fifth with a final record of 36-8 with a last-second takedown over Central Cass's Cheyenne Helland for a 3-1 win, and the senior ends her career as the Cards' first all-time victories leader.
Mercedes Lura (32-13) capped a sparkling sophomore season with a sixth-place finish at 120 pounds, and freshman Khendra Garcia took home seventh at 140. Both wrestlers had 3-2 records at the state meet.
Four others got tournament victories, those being Kenzie Jost (105), Kylie Skadberg (115), Kendall Kovar (125), Karlee Lesmann (155) and Ashley Lindberg (250).
Bismarck scored 189 points to take the individual tournament crown, surpassing runner-up Minot's 169. Last year's inaugural champion, Central Cass, placed third at 156, and Bismarck Legacy took fourth with 140 points.
