From the Past: Malinski grand champion at 'Dilly Day'

March 11, 1948

William H. Cook, 36, farmer of near Carrington, met his death in an accident at about 5:30 p.m. Friday while he was doing chores. As he walked from the pump hose on his way to the barn, he tripped and fell into the water tank from the icy snow bank which was higher than the tank, and became unconscious when his head struck the tank. The tank was half filled with water and Cook drowned.

The Barlow Livestock 4-H Club was reorganized February 3 with Jerrold Skadberg and John Schmid as leaders. Virgil Larson was elected president, Dale Schmid vice president and Kermit Skadberg secretary-treasurer. Other members are: Marvin Skadberg, who is a student at NDAC, James Skadberg, Ronald Larson, Thomas Larson, Gary Schmid, Jimmy Erickson and Eugene Lucy.

County 4-H delegates to the annual achievement institute at NDAC March 23 to 26 have in nearly all cases now been chosen, according to H.E. Rilling, state 4-H club leader of NDAC Extension Service. Foster County delegates are Ronald Luttschwager, Grace City; Darrel Pederson, Bordulac; Lester Black, Rose-Haven Variety; Donna Lyman, Grace City; Arvilla Cook, Carrington; Marilyn Aasand, McHenry.

Returns were received here this week giving the information that the Carrington bowling team, composed of Gordon Stene, Thos. Cousins, Oscar Dell, Eddie Winterer and Phil Brennan, placed 10th in the tournament recently played in Bismarck. Seventy-two teams played in that event.

Recent births at Carrington Hospital include: March 3 - girl to Mr. and Mrs. Norman Holth, Carrington; March 6 - boy to Mr. and Mrs. John Bauley, Kenmare; March 8 - girl to Mr. and Mrs. Richard Neumiller, Sykeston; March 9 - girl to Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kreiter, Sykeston.

March 14, 1973

The future of irrigation in the Foster County area continues to be a frequently heard topic at meetings of those concerned with agriculture. The latest examination of the local irrigation prospects came from Ken Fuhrman of Tri-County Electric at the Wednesday meeting of the Carrington Kiwanis club.

Mrs. Wallace Miller has been named Outstanding Handicapped Citizen for the Carrington area in 1973. Her name will be placed in nomination for the Governor’s Award as North Dakota’s Outstanding Citizen.

The N.D. Winter Show concluded in Valley City Sunday. A Hereford steer shown by Betty Schroeder of Bordulac was judged the champion of all breeds in the halter steer division. Her animal was named the best Hereford judged in the halter steer class, which is considered on the merits of the animal rather than showmanship.

Carrington Mrs. Jaycees are assisting the Kidney foundation of the upper Midwest, Inc., in carrying out the first statewide community level registration drive for donors of bodily organs.

LaVerne T. Espeset will retire from service with J.C. Penney Co. at the end of the month. He has been manager of the Fargo store since Nov. 1, 1964. Espeset had his first managership with the company at Carrington, from 1950 to 1959.

Cathy Miller of Carrington was a member of the 60-piece UND Varsity Winds Show Band, directed by Robert Van Voorhis, that performed at the N.D. Winter Show in Valley City.

A boy was born March 12, at Carrington Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. J. Maurice Carr.

More than 70 persons have pre-registered for an adult class in interior decorating presented by Carrington High School, Mrs. Susan Wolsky, CHS Home Ec instructor, said.

Cedy Malinski was the grand champ at the Pickle Dilly Days contest which was held during the Winterfest in Carrington last week. There were 24 pickle entries.

Bob Serfoss is the new sales representative at NAPA Auto Parts in Carrington.

Pamela McDermott of Carrington was the lucky winner of a cuddly bear given at the Carrington Post Office. His name was drawn from those who voted in the “Celebrate the Century” promotion. Patrons chose from their favorite stamps depicting the 1950s.

Neil Simon’s legendary comedy, “The Odd Couple,” will be this year’s dinner theatre production of Harvey’s Top Hat Play House.

Foster County’s 4-H FFA Livestock Team earned the state’s grand champion title held at the Winter Show in Valley City. The Livestock judging team included Tim Schroeder, Missy Montgomery, Michael Munkeby, Sara VandeHoven, Brian Walker, and Kurt Froelich. The 4-H Senior Livestock team consisted of Chris Kubal, Cody Montgomery, Paula Walker and Jeff Wede and the 4-H Junior Livestock team included Jason Topp, Tyler Doeling, Jacob Geske, and Jarred Higgins.

Brenda Loken, nurse at the Foster County Medical Center is the Chamber of Commerce’s Employee of the Month for February.

“Up the Down Staircase,” a comedy in two acts, will be presented at the Kensal School on Friday, March 27. Cast includes students in 7 - 12 grades and is under the direction of Lyla Ableidinger.

Karen Keys, former Carrington High School athlete who excelled in throwing the shot put, placed 8th in the Women’s Big 10 Indoor Track Meet held in Lansing, Michigan. Keys participates for Ohio State where she is a second year student enrolled in nursing.
