From the Past: New court floor at Carrington Armory

75 Years Ago

April 1, 1948

D.J. Graham of Carrington has been appointed the Foster County chairman of the Salvation Army rural service board. It was announced this week by Major Ernest R. Orchard, the state director of the organization.

A.C. Langseth, Carrington, was elected chairman of the Foster County a non-partisan league when the group was held Saturday in the courthouse here. Paul Marriage was named vice chairman and Leo Steinman, secretary.

New art glass windows, recently installed in Trinity Lutheran Church, will be dedicated at special services at the church next Sunday evening, April 4, at 8 o’clock, it is announced by Rev. E.E. Lang, the church pastor. Speakers on this occasion will be two former pastors, Rev. A.L. Keller and Rev. Meske, and three other pastors, Rev. W.W. Keller, Jamestown, Rev. O. Boettcher, Fessenden and Rev. E. Sletten, New Rockford.

Only slight injuries were sustained by five members of the Carrington school faculty who were involved in an auto accident on highway No. 281 last Thursday evening. The group was going to New Rockford where some members of the party were to take trains to their homes for the Easter vacation.

In the group were Miss Marjory Solheim, Miss Sylvia Aafedt, Misses Madelyn Johnson, Beverly Olson and Adelaide Johnson. The car went out of control and luckily none suffered ill effects except for minor scratches.

Fields and Skjonsby, Carrington, has been appointed Massery-Harris dealer in Carrington, and a contract for that dealership has been signed by both parties. This announcement was made this week by Marvin Fields, one of the partners in the firm.

John Lessner had the misfortune of breaking his leg, a compound fracture, when he slipped while working on the road machines in the county shed at Sykeston last Tuesday afternoon.

50 Years Ago

April 4, 1973

The Foster County State Bank sponsored Pesos of Carrington finished the season among the top four amateur basketball teams in the state as decided by a tournament at Bismarck last week.

The warm early spring weather has been good to Carrington golfers. Many have taken to the links in the past week, including the Carrington High School golf team.

Grain from the Foster County area continues to clog elevators as no improvements in the grain transportation situation have been noted since January.

Mary Jo, Stephanie, William, Chris and Marty, the five youngest children of Wallace Graham of Carrington, were taken by plane to Eaton Rapids, Mich., Mar. 28, to begin residence in their new home in the VFW National Home. Wetrich explained: “The necessity for the move was brought about by Mr. Graham’s desire to keep the children together since the death of his wife Jean Mary in October, 1971. Although Mr. Graham gallantly made the effort of providing adequate supervision for his children and at the same time continue his work in construction, which involves travel over a wide area, the problems proved insurmountable.”

Neil Lund and James Kraemer of Carrington, are members of the NDSU Varsity Men’s Glee Club, which will present a concert with the NDSU Women’s Glee Club at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at Festival Hall. Becky S. Silkey, Carrington, and Barbara Stahl, Binford, are members of the women’s group.

Mr. and Mrs. Reinhart A. Lange of Carrington announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathryn (Kay) Mary, to Ronald Gene Cossette, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Cossette, Fargo.

Mr. and Mrs. James Stewart announce the engagement of their daughter, Diane Marie to Elwyn Krogh, son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Sheets, all of Carrington.

Last week volunteers were laying the new sport court floor in the Carrington Armory.

Bob Henson is a new agronomist at the Carrington Extension Research Station. His job will be doing a variety of crop production research, evaluating agro-chemicals and research on alternative crops.

Dale Schindler is retiring from being the Foster County blade operator after 24 years on the job.

Playing at the Carrington Youth Center “Titanic” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

Chaseley News - Joe Braunagel & Connie Czech attended the “Soup & Such” meeting in Goodrich Sunday night.

A birthday party for Janell Kruger of Bremen was held at Kim and Laura Hart’s on Sunday afternoon.

Billie and Kenny Rexine were Sunday visitors of Issy Fike. Other visitors of Issy’s during the week were Jerry Fike of Carrington and Steve and Kara Fike.

Glenfield News – The Glenfield Lutheran Church held a brunch on Sunday, March 29 at the Glenfield Community Center. There was a very good turn out for it.

Barton and Iris Johnson took their mother June to Fargo on Wednesday for a doctor appointment.

Hawksnest News - Jim Kleinsasser of Grand Forks came home on Friday to visit his parents, Carter and Kathie Kleinsasser, Jim returned to Grand Forks on Saturday evening.
