Tree replacement program continues

In 2023, the City of Carrington will continue the tree removal and replacement project for ash trees on city boulevards.

The 2019 inventory of City trees found 1,860 public trees and of those, 48%, or 887 trees, were ash trees. The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), an invasive insect, could potentially kill all the ash trees on public boulevards and kill all private ash trees, as well.

The City has applied for and received three grants to help remediate the ash tree situation in Carrington. Removal of 35-45 poor ash trees occurred in both 2021 and 2022. Twenty-five suitable trees were replanted in spring 2022 and a similar number will be available for replanting on boulevards in 2023.

More removals will be done later this summer. The goal is to rejuvenate our city forest with trees of various ages and species so that it can resist future challenges.

In early March, EAB was confirmed to be in the city of Moorhead, Minn. This is now the closest location to North Dakota. Please be on the lookout for ash tree damage in your neighborhood. Visit the City website at http://www.carringtonnd.com. Find tree and EAB information under Departments/ Tree Board.

Homeowners interested in planting new, free trees in the public right-of-way should contact City Hall at 652-2911 by April 15. All tree planting or removals in the public right-of-way must be authorized by the Public Works Director.
