Genevieve Copenhaver

Genevieve Copenhaver, age 96, died Friday, April 7, 2023, at her home in rural Carrington, N.D.

Genevieve's visitation was Thursday, April 13 from 3:00-6:45 p.m., followed by a Rosary at 6:45 p.m., and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m., all at Evans Funeral Home, Carrington.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Carrington, N.D., with Fr. Terry Dodge and Deacon Bart Salazar officiating. Special music was by Marlene Boyer, pianist, and The Sacred Heart Choir. Her burial was at the Carrington Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Nick Tardif, Lucas Copenhaver, Thomas Oakland, Zach Oakland, Jake Copenhaver and Lee Copenhaver.

Honorary bearers were Gen's great-grandchildren.

Genevieve Mae was born April 25, 1926, the daughter of Mathias and Anna (Goebel) Huss, at Wells County, N.D. She went to school in Sykeston, N.D. After graduation, she kept house for two of her brothers before moving to Fargo, N.D., to work at the telephone company.

Later, she moved back to Carrington and worked at the Foster County State Bank for a few years.

On October 24, 1956, Genevieve was united in marriage to Stanley Copenhaver, Jr., in Carrington, N.D. After raising six kids, Genny worked for several years in the laundry department at Golden Acres Manor. Holidays were special, because of her homemade buns and she always made extra for the grandchildren to take with them. She carried on this tradition until several years ago. Her faith was very important and she started each day with daily devotions. Genny also enjoyed reading and word finds.

She is survived by her husband, Stan of 66 years; children, Pat of Carrington, N.D., David (Joan) of Carrington, N.D., Jane (Graham) Oakland of Reynolds, N.D., Mary Jo Tardif of Jamestown, N.D. and Steve (Pam) of Sykeston, N.D. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and her sister, Lillian Aljets of Oregon.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Anne Newhouse; grandchildren, Luke and Tess Copenhaver; sons-in-law, Tom Newhouse and Ed Tardif; brothers, Walter, Matt, John, Fritz, Martin, Arthur and Francis (Tom) Huss and sister, Marie Laber.
