Slow snow melt nixes sports week

Temperatures outside are climbing into the 40's and 50's and heralding the late arrival of spring in North Dakota, but snow on much of the state's athletic fields are still hanging on for dear life.

In Carrington, the complications of that snow, still over a foot-and-a-half high in spots, have led to the postponement of the start of three sports seasons.

Though the Cardinal track team has gotten in two indoor meets in Fargo so far, their outdoor season will have to wait for at least one more week.

The scheduled Bison Stampede meet in Hazen last Tuesday, April 11, was cancelled, and conditions also led to the cancellation of the American Legion Meet in Lisbon, which would have been held today (April 17).

With the white nuisance still covering the Stadium '22 track and infield, the Kiwanis/Lions Track Meet slated for Tuesday in Carrington has also been cancelled. As of this issue's publication, the status of meets after April 18 have not been decided.

CHS' baseball team has also witnessed the delay of their season's start, as games with Hillsboro/Central Valley (April 6) at City Park, along with road dates at Hatton/Northwood (April 10), South Border (April 11) and Midkota/Dakota Prairie/Lakota (April 14), have been thrown by the wayside.

The latter two opponents on the slate are Region 3 contests, and will be made up at a later date. The future fate of the HCV and H-N games is unknown at this time.

Scheduled games for this upcoming week, all on the road, include varsity/JV Region 3 doubleheaders against SNR in New Rockford today, LaMoure/Litchville-Marion Tuesday and Kidder County on Thursday.

The Cardinal girls softball team begins their second year of varsity play under the direction of first-year Head Coach Brady Smith, and the weather has put a damper on their immediate plans as well.

The intended starting date for the softball squad was also April 6 at Fessenden versus HWC, and other postponed dates included the team's first Region 2 games of the season at May-Port-CG on April 11 and Grafton on April 14.

The home opener at the newly-constructed softball complex is set for today (April 17) against regional opponent Northern Lights at 4 p.m., but that has been scrapped, along with another league game at Midway/Minto on Tuesday. The following week, the Cards are slated to host Thompson on Monday, April 24, but the status of that game is still in limbo.

Meanwhile, the boys golf team at CHS was the last team to get their spring underway, as they began their practice sessions this past Monday, April 10.

The opening meets on the schedule for the team are varsity events at Village Green Golf Course in Moorhead on Monday, April 24, and Leonard the following day, followed by a JV meet in Leonard that Wednesday.

However, Head Coach Brady Morgan said that he doesn't anticipate the team being able to play competitive tournaments until at least the first part of May.
