CHS Honors Night held April 25 at West Gym

There was a full house at CHS Honors Night on Tuesday, April 25. High school students involved in a variety of academic pursuits were recognized for their dedication.

Here are some of the highlights of the annual event, noting those who received special awards while recognizing the efforts of students involved in co-curricular activities that haven't previously been highlighted in this newspaper throughout the school year.

Allison Jarrett, Emma Hone, Max Beumer, McCoy Beckley, Kael Kovar, Nicole Lee, Luke Page, Jack Paulson and Haley Wolsky earned the Presidential Award of Educational Excellence. The award is given to seniors who scored at least a 25 on their ACT and earned a 3.5 GPA or higher in coursework throughout high school.

Director Kristina Schuh honored six senior band and choir members with special awards. In band, the Senior Award went to Jack Paulson, Excellence in Music to Kael Kovar, and the Director's Award to Jazmyn Ybarra. In choir, Autumn Munson, Haley Wolsky and Chloe Hovdenes were the winners of the Senior Award, Excellence in Music and Director's Awards, respectively.

Also in music awards, Dylan Bachmeier was the Most Improved winner for band, and Braden Kruse for choir.

Know Your State advisor Karla Michaelson reported that Emma Hone placed fourth in the state competition, which was held at Bismarck State College on April 25. Additional finalists were Kaylee Barone, Chloe Hovdenes, Nicole Lee, Ethan Gast and Jake Otto.

The Science Olympiad program had a strong showing at regional competition this year. Patrick Boehmer and Carrie Nichols, the senior and junior advisors, reported that both teams ranked in the top five and were the top overall Class B teams in the regional events. The junior high team finished fourth overall, while the senior high team finished fifth. Both teams advanced to the State Science Olympiad, held Saturday, April 22.

Sage Patzer was recognized as the Most Improved Speaker, Kaley Kostelnik received the Hardest Worker and Sarah Hallwachs the Most Valuable Speaker awards from speech advisor Kristen Hewitt.

Superintendent Janelle Helm, a Kiwanis Club member, recognized four senior students with awards and scholarships from the organization. Kael Kovar received the Art award, Gavyn Anderson for band and Kaylee Barone for choir, in the amount of $100 each. Jack Paulson received a $1,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club as well.

Carrington Chamber and Economic Development Corporation President Kim Cook also recognized Braden Kruse with the CCEDC Scholarship, which is given to a senior who has worked at a member business during high school.

One CHS senior, Kael Kovar, received the Dr. Michael W. Emmerich scholarship, now in its sixth year. The scholarship totals up to $19,500 per year, and is renewable for four years. A total of $525,000 in scholarships have been given to CHS students over the past five years.

Leading Edge Equipment presented the $20,000 North Dakota Career Builders scholarship, given to someone enrolled in the John Deere tech program, to Evan Cates.

The Art Whitaker Memorial Scholarship was presented to Braden Kruse, Hudson Schmitz and Allison Jarrett.

Jennifer Wede of the Carrington Lions Club gave out two scholarship awards. Haley Wolsky was the recipient of the Pat Roundy Memorial Scholarship, and Allison Jarrett earned the Al Larson Memorial Scholarship.

Braden Kruse and Jack Paulson received scholarships from Bank Forward/Insure Forward.

The Foster County Farm Bureau scholarship winner was McCoy Beckley.

Katie Jo Gussiaas Memorial Scholarships were presented to Allison Jarrett, Emma Hone, Max Beumer, McCoy Beckley, Kael Kovar, Nicole Lee, Luke Page, Jack Paulson and Haley Wolsky. The same nine seniors also received the Delores Neuman Award.

The $1,500 Jerry Eissinger Scholarship, presented by Dakota Central, went to Allison Jarrett.

The Beck Scholarships, presented for excellence in science and math to those planning to pursue a career in sciences, were presented in the amount of $2,000 to Braden Kruse and $250 to Nicole Lee.

Thirty-one seniors received a total of $14,900 in scholarships from the Dollars for Scholars program: Gavyn Anderson, Kaylee Barone, McCoy Beckley, Max Beumer, Evan Cates, Luke Christianson, Jack Erickson, Trace Hoggarth, Emma Hone, Chloe Hovdenes, Ean Hovdenes, Allison Jarrett, Ty Johnston, Kael Kovar, Braden Kruse, Kirra Kvamme, Nicole Lee, Baylee Lura, Lexi McClean, Reese Neis, Kaydence Oatis, Luke Page, Sage Patzer, Jack Paulson, Mya Reimche-Nelson, Hudson Schmitz, Mya Schroeder, Calvin Sisson, Alexis Wangen, Kennedy Wendel and Haley Wolsky.
