Dakota Recreation Report: May 8, 2023

Outdoor notes:

*Antler shed hunting prohibited on all U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service national wildlife refuges.

*Boat registrations now required for the new 3-year registration cycle.

*May 13: Nat’l. Migratory Bird Day.

*May 13: Fargo Birding Festival, Forest River Park, Fargo.

Fishing:

*Devils Lake elevation, May 2: 1,450.18 feet above mean sea level (MSL).

*Stump Lake elevation: 1,450.09 MSL.

*Lake Sakakawea elevation: 1,829.28 MSL; 16,800 cubic feet per second average (CFS) Garrison Dam daily releases.

*N.D. Game & Fish Dept. Dist. game wardens: No reports from Devils Lake or area lakes as anglers wait for open water. Look for walleye success in Channel A from shore. Some shoreline pike activity on the east end of Lake Sakakawea’s back bays.

*Devils Lake, Ed’s Bait Shop, Devils Lake: Devils Lake feeder coulees, including Mauvais, Edmore, and Starkweather coulees, flowing with lots of activity and good walleye success. Devils Lake itself remains iced over.

*Devils Lake, Woodland Resort, Devils Lake: Fair to good for walleye in Channel A from shore. Try the open water along the bridges from shore, as well. Lake remains iced over with limited open shorelines yet.

*Foster County area lakes, Dry Dock, Carrington: Area lakes have open water shorelines but no boat activity yet.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Pioneer Bait & Tackle, Jamestown: Look for increasing activity as area lakes open completely with shorelines now opening for shore-fishing.

*Jamestown Reservoir, Sooper Stop, Jamestown: Anglers working area northern pike lakes from shore using smelt.

*Lake Ashtabula, The Hungry Pelican at the Crossing, Luverne: Some activity along the bridges but no reports on success. Facility tentatively opening May 15.

*Lake Ashtabula, Bayshore, Valley City: Back bays opening up with inflows from area creeks but the lake itself still had ice.

*Lake Sakakawea, Cenex Bait & Tackle, Garrison: Some walleye and pike activity from shore along the open water shorelines on the east end of Lake Sakakawea. Missouri River tailrace producing occasional walleye from both boat and shore. No Lake Audubon reports.

*Lakes Audubon & Sakakawea, Hwy. 83 Lawn & Leisure, Garrison: Look for walleye and pike activity along the open water shorelines on the east end of Lake Sakakawea.

*Lake Sakakawea/Lake Audubon/Missouri River, Scott’s Bait and Tackle, Pick City: Some activity on the Missouri River tailrace but walleye success generally remains slow from both boat and shore. Try smelt from shore for pike in the back bays on the east end of Lake Sakakawea.

*Lonetree WMA area lakes, Harvey: No new reports.

N.D. river data:

*James River, Kensal: River stage, River stage, 8.12 feet; streamflow, 1,270 CFS.

*Pipestem Creek, Pingree: Creek elevation, 8.99 feet; streamflow, 607 CFS.

*Red River, Grand Forks: River stage, 36.1 feet.

*Sheyenne River, Warwick: River stage, 5.14 feet; streamflow, 807 CFS.
