MPCG, down seven, stuns Cards

Nothing is a sure thing in high school baseball.

The May-Port-CG Patriots, after overcoming separate five-run and seven-run deficits, proved that to be the case in a wild one at Mayville Friday afternoon, May 5.

Staring at a 12-5 hole entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pats dug deep, scored the equalizer with a lucky-seven spot, and raced home for a walk-off win and Gatorade bath over Carrington, 13-12.

Marshall Judisch's game-winning single brought home Lucas Fugleberg with the winner after the latter led off the last of the seventh with a triple.

In that sixth inning, MPCG wore a path around the bases with CHS' self-inflicted control issues. Five walks, a double error, and one hit batter all came around to score. The only hit of the inning, a two-run single by Ethan Bergstrom, knotted the game up at a dozen apiece.

In the tough defeat for the Cards, Corbin Clifton and Grady Shipman each had three hits with two doubles in their trips to the plate, and Hudson Schmitz also had a double.

The first inning featured a five-run Carrington outburst, featuring one of Shipman's two-baggers, and hits by Clifton and Max Whitman. In the bottom of the frame, the Pats killed off most of that cushion with Walker McGillis' three-run double, to make the score 5-4 after just six outs.

CHS added two in the fourth, and another fiver in the fifth to achieve what looked to be a safe lead up to that point, which set up MPCG's big comeback.

Marshall Kloster got the win with three innings of relief following the starter, Bergstrom.

Looking for his fourth win of the season, Shipman was dinged up over two innings of work, and was followed by Corbin Clifton.

Owen Hagel would take the loss, giving up four runs in an inning-plus, but just one of those runs were earned.

Fugleberg, Landon Koenig and Jacob Hutter had two-hit ballgames for May-Port-CG, who was playing just their fifth game of the season and improved to 3-2. Both losses came to Region 2 contender Thompson.

With the stinging defeat, CHS dropped to 9-2 overall on the spring season.
