From the Past: Carrington excels at music contest

75 Years Ago

May 20, 1948

Nearly 150 boys have been registered for North Dakota Boys State, Americanism program sponsored by the American Legion, which will be conducted at NDAC in Fargo, June 13 - 20, LeRoy Pease, director, says.

Three organizations in Carrington are sponsoring boys to attend Boys State. The Junior Chamber of Commerce is sending Ross Bestgen, the Kiwanis Club is sponsoring Leonard Albus and the American Legion, James Hogan.

Attending the state Future Homemakers convention in Fargo last weekend were fourteen girls who are taking home economics courses in Carrington High School. Accompanying them was Miss Madelyn Johnson, home economics instructor.

Miss Joann Putnam has been chosen delegate from the local group to the national FHA convention to be held in Kansas City.

Ernest W. Erickson, formerly of Glenfield, a Northern Pacific machinist was recently promoted to night roundhouse foreman in the N.P. shop at Mandan.

City officers recently appointed by Mayor Guy Cook and approved by the city council include the following: T.A.Roney, city attorney; Robert Brady, chief of police; F. K. Wheeler, fire chief; A.H. Ebentier, city auditor and Frank Mann, city pump man. Dr. R.F. Gilliand continues in the office of city health officer, being a holdover appointee.

First place in the state was won by each of three entries from Carrington High School in the state music contests held at the University of North Dakota last Friday.

Osbourne T. Belshelm, music instructor, took his clarinet soloist, the boys’ quartet and boys’ glee club to Grand Forks for the contest. Beverly Kriewald, the soloist, received the highest rating, highly superior for her number. The two boys’ vocal groups were rated excellent, the highest rating given.

50 Years Ago

May 23, 1973

No change has been noted by Fargo doctors in the condition of six-year-old Jay Winning. The youngster continued to remain unconscious Monday, according to his father, Bob Winning of Carrington. Doctors are yet unable to tell the Winnings what to expect for Jay. The six-year-old has not regained consciousness since being struck by a moving vehicle on the Highway 281 overpass in Carrington April 30.

Ann Voglewede of Carrington, was among 375 candidates for Bachelor of Arts degree at Macalester College, St. Paul. The class was honored at the college’s 84th commencement ceremonies May 20. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. W. C. Voglewede.

Word has been received from Des Moines that Carrington javelin star Steve Held has been officially invited to participate in the All American High School Track and Field Championships. The event will be held at Drake University in Des Moines, June 9. Steve will compete against seven other athletes in his event who are considered among the best in the nation.

Mary Jean Schroeder of Bordulac is one of six high school seniors who have been named winners of $125 Homemakers council scholarships for 1973.

Susan Rohe of Pettibone is one of 22 girls from Minnesota and North Dakota to attend the 1973 Engineering Institute at UND, Grand Forks, June 3-9.

James Stewart is one of 44 UND freshmen who have been initiated into Phi Eta Sigma, honorary freshman men’s fraternity.

Four were named honor students of the Grace City graduating class. They are Pamela Haley, Rosemary Dreher, Jill Topp and Gloria Wright.

Neal A. Lundby of Sykeston and Miles S. Pound of McHenry were among 22 Air Force ROTC cadets at University of N.D., who were honored at an awards ceremony at Grand Forks AFB.

May 25, 1998

Dr. Jane M. Harmon, daughter of Ralph and Arlyn Harmon of Carrington, has been named President of Adirondack Community College in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains in upstate New York.

Carrington Cardinal’s Sarah Klein has qualified for eight events at the state track meet. She is an eighth grader. Rules for state track say that she can only participate in four events.

A New Rockford man has died of the injuries he received in a truck collision east of Carrington last week. Gerald Clifton, 49 was the victim. Clifton was driving a 1991 International semi and attempted to turn onto Highway 200 at the Bordulac corner. Jeff Laber, 44, of Carrington was driving a NDDOT semi traveling east on Highway 200, when he struck the passenger side of Clifton’s truck. Clifton was ejected from the semi. He was taken by ambulance to Carrington Health Center and then airlifted to MeritCare in Fargo where he died.

Natalie Stangeland, senior at Midkota, was named “Outstanding Performer” at the State Class “B” Music Festival at Minot State University.

After seven thousand students and thirty-three years at Carrington High School and twenty-three years as high school principal Big Al is retiring at the end of this school term.

An accident near Woodworth May 18, sent a Pingree man to the hospital. James Odenbach, 24, of Pingree, was taken by ambulance to a Jamestown hospital. The accident happened four miles east of Woodworth on Highway 36. Odenbach was traveling east in a 1988 Cadillac, when a northbound truck driven by Richard Amann, 73, of Eckelson collided with him after failing to yield at an intersection. Amann was not injured in the accident.

Desiree Lynn DeVillers and Jason Glen Morlock of Carrington announce their engagement. The wedding date is set for June 20 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Carrington.
