Cardinal girls' relays earn state berths at D.L. Rotary

With their final regular season track meet in Devils Lake, Carrington was able to earn several more state track meet entries at the Rotary Monday afternoon, May 15.

The Cardinal girls won another team title with 194 points, and the boys took third with 81 behind the host Firebirds and Benson County, but all that was secondary to the Cards' standard-surpassing aims.

New qualifiers at the meet included both the 4x100 and 4x200-meter girls' relays, with Haley Wolsky and Isabel Wendel being common threads in both. In the short race, the duo teamed with Sierra Friedt and Kennedy Wendel to clock 52.76, while combining forces with Mercedes Lura and Edyn Hoornaert for a 1:50.81 effort.

In solo events, Lura put her name in the 300-meter hurdle field with a time of 48.42, and Kenadie Pazdernik achieved the 1,600-meter automatic berth in 5:33.15. Wolsky and Lura matched previous state-caliber efforts in pole vault, jumping 9'6" and 9'0", respectively, as did Madison Johnson in the 800 in 2:21.28.

The boys' side had one new qualifier, the 4x400-meter relay team of Jaxon Schaefer, McKade Zink, Ryder Bickett and Logan Weninger, taking first in 3:32.51.

In other accomplishments, a personal milestone was set by senior pole vaulter Kael Kovar by clearing a career-high 12'6". Weninger got two more wins in the 400 (50.72) and the 300 hurdles (41.03), surpassing the qualification times, and Bickett again took the javelin with a 166'2" toss.

Carrington traveled to the South Central Regional Track Meet at Hazen High School Friday, May 19, with the hopes of gaining more state qualifiers by placing in the top three of each team or individual event. In the event of weather, the alternate date for the regional competition was Saturday, May 20.

Next up will be the State Track Meet, to be held at the MDU Resources Community Bowl in Bismarck Thursday through Saturday, May 25-27.
