From the Past: New ownership at Fireside Inn

75 Years Ago

May 27, 1948

Mrs. J.L. Romine was elected president of the Band Mothers Club when the business session of the club was held last Tuesday. Mrs. Lyman Robertson was elected vice president, Mrs. Jacob Hass secretary and Mrs. Henry Kirchoff, treasurer.

Jud Tracy was elected president of the Carrington Junior Chamber of Commerce at the annual meeting last Thursday evening at the regular meeting place. He succeeds Russ Marcussen, who has been serving since the resignation of last year’s president, Harold Dufelmeier.

Three new directors were also elected, with Roy Solberg, Clifford Hill and George Olson receiving the highest number of votes and thereby filling the three year, two year and one year directorships, respectively.

At a recent meeting of the Senior Girl Scout troop, Betty Fornshell and Irene Steinman were elected to attend the 1948 regional conference to be held in Rapid City Sunday, June 23 to 25.

New officers elected for the Women’s Literary Club for the coming year were: Mrs. Kenneth Wheeler, president; Mrs. Ted Ramsey, vice president; Mrs. Art Ebentier, secretary; Mrs. George Stewart, treasurer; Mrs. J.L. Howe, historian; Mrs. Harvey Sletten, club reporter; Mrs. Wm. Kunkel, critic; Mrs. E.W. Wheeler, corresponding secretary; Mrs. R.F. Gilliland and Mrs. L.W. Winterer program committee members.

Honoring her son Darwin, who was 6 years old last Friday, and her son Ronald, who will be five on June 2, Mrs. M.O. Peterson entertained seven guests at a birthday party Monday.

50 Years Ago

May 30, 1973

Central Steel Building and Construction, Inc. of Carrington was the successful bidder on a 50 X 75 steel building that will serve as a museum for Foster County.

The Sacred Heart Catholic Church, congregation will honor Rev. Felix, J. Preske with a special Mass of Thanksgiving commemorating his 25th year as a priest Sunday. Members of Rev. Preske’s family who are also priests will celebrate the Mass with him and will take part in a program of recognition.

Management changes are coming to a well-known Carrington area business as Mr. and Mrs. Gene Sondag are preparing to turn over the Fireside Inn to a couple from Minnesota, Mr and Mrs. Roger Bengston. The change will be effective June 5 after an inventory has been completed.

Highway patrolman Richard Bjornson is moving up in the ranks of the Patrol and away from Carrington. Beginning in early June, he will assume duties in Williston, where he will be known as Sergeant Bjornson.

Patrolman Rodney Zieman has been transferred to Carrington to replace Bjornson. Zieman joined the Patrol in 1969 and has been stationed in Fargo. He is a Sheyenne native and is married.

Growing pains for Steinman Manufacturing will intensify this summer as the local factory is preparing for expansion that will triple its business by 1974. Notification has come from Steinman’s parent company, United Farm Tools of South Charleston, W.Va. That authorizes an 80x80 addition to the existing 60x80 factory building.

Lori Paulson won at least a share of the girls high jump record at the state meet at Minot Friday. She gained her third title as state champ in Class A as meet officials credited her with a leap of 5-1.

June 1, 1998

A $200,000 settlement from United Fire and Casualty over a botched 1995 runway resurfacing job is being used to upgrade the Carrington Municipal Airport.

Ole Ihringer, Bordulac, is Foster County’s only remaining World War I veteran.

Tom Zwinger, a former Sykeston man, who is retiring from a California police force, is being honored as Officer of the Quarter. He is a 1962 Sykeston High School graduate.

Four individuals are running for two city council seats in Carrington. The four that are running include Harold Hertel, Mike Larson, Aaron Abaurrea and Julie Sherman.

Obituaries - Bernice Stedman, 82, Carrington, died May 21; Zada Torgrimson, 82, New Rockford, died May 23.

New Arrivals - Austin Dean, born May 21, to Deanna Kracht, Kensal.

Carrington’s girls finished second and the boys third in the Region 3 track meet at Rugby.

Chaseley News - Alyce Hart and Bev Hart attended eighth grade graduation Wednesday morning in Bowdon. Roger and Janell Krueger were Memorial Day visitors at Orval Harts. Susie Schauer and girls and Jim Haluska were weekend guests of Esther Haluska. Tim Hart was a Saturday overnighter of Nathan and Bev Hart.

Glenfield - Ruby and Lewie Pewe attended Natalie Stangeland’s graduation at Glenfield.

Hyllis and Roy McDaniel spent the weekend at Arnold and Margaret McDaniels.

Ninie & Maurice Brandvold spent Sun afternoon at the Randy Munson cabin at Juanita Lake.

Marion and Christine Halvorson visited Isgrig’s Sunday afternoon.
