Seniors encouraged to apply for food packs

Known more commonly as the Great Plains Food Bank Senior Food Pack Program, the Commodity Supplemental Nutrition Program (CSFP) is a U.S. Department of Agriculture program that supplies individuals aged 60 and over with incomes less than 130 percent of the federal poverty line with nutritionally based, shelf-stable food packages.

The Great Plains Food Bank currently operates the program inside 26 counties in N.D., including Foster County, where the program operates alongside the Great Plains Food Bank Mobile Distribution.

Qualified patrons complete a short, one-time application at least two weeks prior to a mobile distribution.

When the Senior Food Pack Program was added to the Carrington mobile distribution, there were only four clients, but the program has expanded to serve 14 persons.

In addition to the items already distributed through the mobile distribution, senior pack clients receive a box of canned goods, a “grain bin” box of pastas and other starches, and a third box of shelf-stable items, along with two boxes of cheese, every two months.

Application forms are available online at https://www.greatplainsfoodbank.org/our-work/feed-seniors/, or ask for forms at the mobile intake site June 15 at Dakota Central. Carrington’s local coordinator is Linda Schuster (701-653-6028).
