140 years young: Sykeston's Celebration July 7-9

The small, but proud community in southeast Wells County sitting on the banks of Lake Hiawatha since 1883 is celebrating a milestone birthday.

Sykeston's 140th Celebration is scheduled for July 7-9, with an extensive slate of events planned.

On Friday, July 7, 140th Celebration registration will be held at the Fire Hall downtown from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Bingo will be held at the Fire Hall starting at 7 p.m., with prizes of $250, $500 and $1,000.

From 8 p.m.-midnight, Bradee Schroeder will provide DJ services for the celebration, and the fireworks display, sponsored by Wholesale Ag Products, is scheduled to start at 10:15 p.m.

Saturday, July 8, will include the Firemen's Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Fire Hall from 8:30 to 11 a.m. with free will offering.

At 9 a.m., the 5K Run/2K Walk will be held in memory of David Young. Registration for the run/walk begins at 8:15 a.m., with a cost of $10 per participant.

From 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., kids' games and activities (including inflatables) will be held on Main Street.

Other Saturday events include:

• Closest to the Pin Golf Contest, on the south side of Lake Hiawatha, 1-4 p.m.

• Class Competition, Main St., 2-3:30 p.m.

• Banquet Meal featuring roast beef and chicken, Fire Hall, 5-7 p.m.

• Social and Open Mic Night, Main St., 7-9 p.m. Alumni are encouraged to share their best stories of Sykeston, or perform a song or skit, time permitting.

• Live Music, Frantic Anarchy, 9 p.m.-1 a.m.

The Sykeston School will also be open for touring from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. A special Memorial Tree will be on the second floor of the 1913 school building, for visitors to hang an ornament in memory of a classmate or loved one who attended SHS.

Sunday morning, July 9, coffee and rolls will be served at the Fire Hall at 8 a.m-11 p.m.

Church services will be held at St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church starting at 11 a.m., and various Carrington churches are also open for worship. See page 6 for a list of churches and service times.

At 12 noon, Preservation Sykeston's Picnic in the Park will be held, with free will offering. Pulled pork, hot dogs, beans, chips, and ice cream will be served.

Food options for celebration goers will include the Sykeston Dam Bar and Grill and Sykeston Legion, along with Fetch's Chuckwagon (mobile food stand).
