She then started her working career for the Red Owl Company in Carrington, Harvey, and Fargo. In 1951, Gen began working as a telephone operator at Northwestern Bell in Carrington. Gen married Percy Hambrick in Jamestown in December of 1952. Their son James (Jim) was born in Aberdeen in March of 1965 and they returned to Carrington later that year when they purchased the 5 Spot Bar. Gen then began her banking career at Foster County State Bank (Bremer) in 1966, where she served in the roles of teller and personal banking officer.

Percy died in May of 1993. In September of 1998, she married Kenneth (Ken) Klein at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington. She retired from nearly 33 years of banking in 1998. Ken passed away in February 2009.

Gen was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She served on the church council, TLCW, and was a Sunday school secretary for many years. Gen also served on other boards and committees including Foster County Housing and Carrington Hospital, and was in the Carrington Lions Club.
