1936 Six-Man state champs remembered at SHS

Independent reader and Sykeston Class of 1969 graduate Roger Laber shared this photograph of the 1936 North Dakota Six-Man Football state champions, the Sykeston Wildcats, and another photo (below) of a bulletin board collage on display in the 1913 school building. The team photo appeared in the November 26, 1936 edition of the Sykeston News, and was taken by William Covell. It was part of a collection of memorabilia given to Cindy Tweed of the Community Club by team member Irvin Stiles' niece, Marilyn Heimark of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and displayed at the school, with the state champion trophy at lower left. Stiles graduated from SHS in 1938.

Team personnel are, L-R: Superintendent A.W. Larson, Herbert Ziegeldorf, Clinton Kutz, Louis Linhart, Norbert Arendt, Merle Atkinson, Orville Laber and Clarence Linhart. Middle: Mascot Thomas Joyce (holding his water jug) and Francis Huss. Top row: Coach Myron Wiest, Stanley Stiles, Irvin Stiles, Vernon Malley, Eugene Ockert, Ed Hammes and Captain Orvel Lundby.
