From the Past: Local scouts at Wilderness Camp

75 Years Ago

July 22, 1948

Back from a fishing trip ‘way north of Canada, Dr. Voglewede reports good fishing and expresses enthusiasm over the use of the airplane in travel.

The doctor, who received his pilot’s license just three weeks ago, flew a Carrington Flying Service plane to International Falls, Minn., to join a fishing party of old friends.

Camping out at Wilderness Scout camp in Minnesota this week are: Jimmie Ebentier, Donald Froelich, Bumpy Smith, Sam, Gail and Allen Zimmerman, Lyle Hanson, Mike Winterer, Donald Peterson, Freddie Moberg, Dean and Bruce Skjonsby and Jimmy Foster.

Car owners within the city limits are urged to park their cars within their own premises instead of on the street, according to a public notice from W.H. Roach, street and water superintendent. He said cars parked along the street interfere with the grading of the streets.

“The Senator was Indiscreet” will be at the Grand Theatre on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, with William Powell and Ella Raines taking the leading roles.

Penny Singleton and Arthur Lake star in another Dagwood Bumstead comedy. “Blondie’s Anniversary,” which will be at the Grand next Wednesday and Thursday, July 28 and 29.

Carrington is to have a circus Saturday, July 24, according to advance notices and posters about town. Stevens Bros. Circus is booked for two performances, one at 2 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.

More spaces will be available in the large exhibit tent at the Foster County Fair this year. It was announced this week by H.C. Duntley, president of the fair board. He said the south end of the tent will be used by the larger commercial exhibitors. Previously the south end of the tent had been used for livestock exhibits.

50 Years Ago

July 25, 1973

Five Californians have settled in Melville for the summer and have swelled the male population of that tiny Foster County community. They are Bill Loesch and his four sons, Ray 14, Lewis 13, Billy 12 and Dennis 11. For the elder Loesch, the summer stay in Melville is a return to his boyhood home.

Leonard Talle has been named to complete the term of Lawrence Utke on the town council of Glenfield and Harland Erickson was chosen chairman, to serve as mayor.

A casualty of an early morning encounter with a moving vehicle, the traffic light on Carrington’s Main Street was down and out Monday. Local police were deliberately vague about the details of the mishap as some uncertainty about the identity of the driver remained Monday.

Approximately 800 hungry folks from Glenfield and the surrounding area passed through the food line at the Harvest Festival Friday evening. The people ate and socialized under the trees of the Glenfield Community Park. The evening concluded with a dance.

Kensal took first place in the Carrington Invitational Pee Wee baseball tournament Thursday. Runnerup was the local Pee Wee team No. 1 followed by Drake in the field of 12. Consolation honors went to Harvey’s No. 1 team.

Members of the Carrington Junior Rough Riders have termed their July 15 horse show a success and have made tentative plans to schedule a similar event next year. Entries and attendance met expectations as approximately 300 horses were in the show.

Wedding vows were exchanged Saturday, July 14, in a two o’clock ceremony at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Sykeston, by Jane M. Wild, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wild, and Craig R. Stern, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Stern, all of Sykeston.

July 27, 1998

Kathe Kleinsasser, Peggy Stern and Mary Habeck staked the For Sale sign in the lawn at “Their Old House.” After 21 months of painting, nailing and wallpapering along with other renovations at 1214 South 2nd Street in Carrington. The three local gals tackled the project themselves, and all of it was done by them except for the plumbing and electrical work. They took out some walls inside, added a staircase, hung their own sheetrock and installed different kitchen cabinets, wallpaper and painted inside and out.

Glenfield Grocery faces closing at the end of the month. The store is also a coffee shop, a resource for the town’s senior citizens and a gathering place for the town’s kids.

Three area teens spent eight weeks this summer working while learning at the Arrowwood National Wildlife Refuge. They included J.R. Penas and Sarah Willyard of Carrington. DeAnn Mack of Kensal and YCC director Byron Hoeckle of Binford.

Cheryl Fettig, kitchen manager at the Prairie Inn was chosen Employee of the Month for July by the Carrington Chamber of Commerce.

Foster County Fair 4-H Livestock sale draws $7,030 in premiums at the Foster County Fair this year.

New arrivals - boy, Payton Nicolas Granger born July 20 to Scott and Barb Granger.

Obituaries - Irene Werre, 73, Carrington died July 18th; Irene Buchmiller, 77, rural Bowdon, died July 17.

Playing at the Youth Center Theatre - Walt Disney “Mulan”

Chaseley News - Leonard Fike and Nathan Hart went to Rugby on Thursday evening to meet the train and bring Delmore Moug from Yelm, WA home with them. He came to visit relatives and attend his mothers’ 96th birthday on Tuesday.

A first-ever Wright family reunion was held on Saturday, July 18th in the Bowdon Community Center.
