FFA places third at state land judging

The Carrington FFA Land Evaluation Team of Brekka Kuss, Joe Lindberg, Molly Hansen, Abby Lee, Bryan Harris, Kelsi Neuman, and Emma Aberle placed third at the State FFA Land Evaluation Career Development Event held in Dickinson, Thursday, August 3.

Individually, Molly Hansen was the first place individual and earned a $250 scholarship, a "Baby Bison" trophy and a traveling trophy. Abby Lee and Emma Aberle also received gold awards. Kelsi Neuman received a silver award. Brekka Kuss, Bryan Harris and Joe Lindberg received bronze awards.

A total of fifty seven FFA members from thirteen FFA chapters participated in the event.

In the land evaluation event, contestants determine surface soil texture, permeability, depth of soil, slope, present surface soil thickness, past erosion, wind erosion hazard, water erosion hazard, saltiness, and surface runoff to determine a land capability class.

Once the land capability class is determined, the contestants suggest vegetative treatments, mechanical treatments, and fertility recommendations to make the land more productive, but also to conserve the land. The contestants evaluate a total of four "sites" in the contest.
