Area youths shine at North Dakota State Fair

Sixty Foster County 4-H'ers exhibited projects at the North Dakota State Fair in late July, achieving impressive results.

In the 4-H livestock division, Cally Hansen exhibited the reserve champion gilt over all breeds. She also had the overall reserve champion market hog. Ty Kulsrud showed the reserve champion Charolais heifer, and Jackson Topp exhibited the reserve champion Angus heifer.

Foster County 4-H'ers exhibited 11 beef, 3 dairy, 1 goat, 11 sheep, 10 swine and 5 rabbits at the state fair.

Four youths earned either grand or reserve champion in the 4-H livestock showmanship contest: Kaydri Cabler, champion junior dairy showman; Molly Hansen, reserve champion senior sheep showman; Kadence Spickler, reserve champion junior sheep showman and Jackson Topp, champion junior beef showman.

With their performances, the four 4-H'ers earned the opportunity to compete in the round-robin contest where they were judged on their ability to exhibit not one, but five species of livestock.

Kaydri Cabler was selected champion showman among the junior 4-H'ers in the round-robin contest and Molly Hansen was champion senior showman.

Foster County 4-H'ers exhibited 183 static projects at the fair.

Grand champion awards were given to Emma Aberle, Visual Arts; Kaydri Cabler, Personal Safety; Neylin Davis, Dairy Cattle Project; Kelsey Johnson, Communication and Expressive Arts; Kyle Johnson, Plant Science; Sara Krause, Dairy Cattle Project; Emma Stangeland, Sewing and Textiles and Jackson Topp, Plant Science.

Reserve champion award winners were Emma Aberle, Dairy Cattle Project; Alivia Blahna, Poultry, Poultry Science and Embryology; Kaydri Cabler, Dairy Cattle Project; Kyle Johnson, Plant Science; Nicole Lee, Visual Arts and Jozey Retzlaff, Visual Arts.

Honorable mention awards were received by Brinn Black, Sewing and Textiles; Alayna Gussiaas, Visual Arts; Izabelle Jager, Visual Arts; Abby Lee, Visual Arts; Karlee Lesmann, Visual Arts and Quaid Spickler, Beef Cattle Project.

The State 4-H Communication Arts Contest was also held during the state fair. Foster County 4-H'ers Paige Black, Aubrie Stangland and Emma Stangeland received an Award of Excellence for their dramatic presentation.
