L/E/M's firepower overwhelms HWC

Langdon/Edmore/Munich threw four touchdown passes, and added two rushing and one defensive score, as the Region favorite Cardinals flew by the HWC Hornets, 50-12, on Friday, August 25, in Langdon.

The Cardinals wasted little time in their initial drive of the game, covering 58 yards in four plays. Three pass completions for 53 yards, including a 27- yard strike from Rayce Worley to Mason Romfo for the game's opening score, led to a quick 6-0 lead for LAEM.

HWC responded with a nice offensive effort, controlling the ball for eight plays covering 38 yards, but an interception by Romfo started the next Cardinal drive.

L/E/M used more of a control offense in their second series, with six rushes in their eight-play drive. Nickolas Kingzett's one yard run and the PAT from Worley moved the score to 14-0 with 3:09 left in the first.

The Cardinals struck one more time in the opening quarter, with a Dawson Hein 26-yard interception return on the Hornets' opening play of their second drive moving the score to 22-0 at the 2:58 mark.

The Hornets stuck to their game plan with a couple of solid runs from Kayl Sieg. A long 36-yard strike from Tallen Thorson to Keaton Keller put HWC in scoring range. Christian Mertz bounced a middle run to the outside and sprinted in for the Hornets' first score, making the score at the end of the first quarter 22-6.

The Cardinal offensive machine continued to roll in the second quarter. A 21-yard strike from Worley to Romfo opened the second quarter, setting up a two yard scoring run from Worley. The PAT pass from Worley to Romfo made it a 30-6 game. The Hornet offense continued to find ways to move the ball, but the Cardinal defense found ways to bend and not break as they stopped the next HWC drive after seven plays.

L/E/M's final score of the first half was set up by a 37-yard strike from Worley to Cody Amble. The Hornet defense forced a fourth- and-long, but Worley found Romfo for a 20-yard score and a 36-6 halftime lead.

The Hornets put together their most sustained drive of the season starting in the third quarter. HWC moved the ball 75 yards on 16 plays, using a combination of run and pass plays. After a Cardinal sack for a loss of eight yards, Thorson found Kayl Sieg deep across the middle for a 42-yard pass completion, setting up HWC at the five yard line. Two Sieg runs later, Kayl found the endzone and the Hornets were on the board again at 12-36 with 2:52 remaining in the third.

L/E/M's answer for that was a big return by 215- pound Cole Welsh who advanced to the HWC 18- yard line. The Cardinals eventually found paydirt with a nice five-yard pass from Jax Johnson to Kingzett. The PAT run by Johnson was good, moving the score to 44-12 after three. The final score of the night midway through the fourth came via a deflected pass. A 22 yard pass from Johnson was battled a couple of times before Tanner McDonald came down with it and sprinted in for the final score of the night and a 50-12 victory for the Cardinals.

Statistical leaders for HWC included Keaton Keller and Christian Mertz on defense with Keller having 10 tackles and Mertz seven. Offensively, Thorson completed 11 passes for 152 yards while Sieg rushed 15 times for 56 yards and Keller caught six passes for 71 yards..
