Books & Bits: September is Library Card Month

It may surprise you to hear it, but as the city library director I really believe more people should be using the library! September is a great time to explore what we can do for you as it is National Library Card Sign-Up month. Why should people use the library? Here are 10 reasons:

1. The main reason people still visit the library is to check out books. Your library card can let you travel around the globe on countless adventures and through time to meet all kinds of people, fictional and real. And with a library card, you travel for free!

2. You can catch up on current events as you browse through newspapers and magazines. We have the Foster County Independent and the Fargo Forum available in print copy and a plethora of others from all over that are available in the digital world. We also can visit the past with our digital newspaper archives.

3. If you enjoy traveling around the state, you can borrow a N.D. Park Pass and visit those parks for free.

4. You can borrow DVDs and reduce your online streaming expenses.

5.If you enjoy foreign travel, you can learn a language through one of the resources available through our library.

6. With your library card, you can access a vast virtual library of audiobooks and ebooks that can be downloaded to your device and taken wherever you go.

7. We have computers for patrons to use, and you don’t need to worry when your printer runs out of ink as we have printing available. We can also fax for you.

8. We have free wifi!

9. You can participate in a variety of programs at the library. Each month, we have reading clubs, preschool storytime, and other events. Following us on Facebook, Instagram or our website is the best way to know what’s going on each month.

10. Finally, libraries are a sustainable institution! Books can be purchased once and then shared and shared and shared. While it’s important to respect the need for writers to earn a living, buying books is very costly for avid readers. Moreso, if you’re like me, space is limited and once I’ve read a book, I might not read it again. So what happens to all those tomes? Better to save a tree and borrow from your library, isn’t it?

Libraries are a free public institution that have a lot to give. All we ask in return is an occasional visit. We hope you’ll come see us soon!
