From the Past: McHenry girls lose opener to Grace City

75 Years Ago

September 23, 1948

Committee chairman of the 1948-49 school term were announced last Wednesday by H.G. Kraus president of the Parent-Teachers Association, when the first meeting of the season was held. Mrs. Wilfred Meyer is program chairman. Mrs. Harold Kively, lunch; Henry Kirchoff, membership; Norman Hanson, attendance; Mrs. C.L. Vreeland, publicity.

Publicity was given recently in a national magazine about the success of Miss Esther Johnson, formerly of Courtenay, who is raising dairy cattle in the Rio Grande Valley. She is a sister of Walter Johnson, prominent calttlemen of the Courtenay community.

Reports on past and current activities and discussion on plans for the future were heard at the meeting of the Foster County Wildlife Chapter last Wednesday evening. President C.W. Yoder presided. Homer Engberg and Harold Meyers told the group of the hatching and feeding of pheasants which the chapter sponsored during the past spring and summer. They declared the efforts put forth this year were highly successful and recommended the project be continued next year. The chapter put pheasant propagation on its 1949 program. In appreciation of the work done by Engberg and Meyers the chapter presented gifts, pen and pencil sets, to them.

At a candlelight ceremony in the Federated Church in Carrington, Thursday evening, September 16, Marjorie Seibold, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Seibold of Sykeston, became the bride of William Dassenko, son of Mrs. Mary Dassenko of Fargo. Rev. D.C. Butherus, Jamestown, officiated at the ceremony.

September 26, 1973

Homecoming activities at Carrington High School begin Thursday as students will elect their royalty that morning. Candidates for the 1973 Homecoming king and queen are Marlene Hoffman, Barbara Schroeder, Julie Haen, Tim Heinly, Dan Zink and Steve Loooysen, all seniors.

A new feature has been added to the line-up of sports events this year. Devils Lake will challenge the CHS girls basketball team Thursday evening beginning at 7:45 p.m.

Dept. Cmdr. Boyd Clemens of Bismarck will be the key speaker at the American Legion’s Fourth District Fall meeting at Kensal on Oct. 8. Legionnaires of John Florhaug Post No. 103 will host the event, to start at 8 p.m. Fourth Dist. Cmdr. Dave Vareberg of Wimbledon will preside, Post 103 Cmdr. Reuel Harrison and Post Adj. William J. Lipetzky are in charge of local arrangements.

Three couples from Cooperstown had their trip to a local steakhouse interrupted by some beef on the hoof Wednesday evening. The Cooperstown people encountered cattle on Highway 200 and a mishap resulted. They struck and killed two critters but missed seven others that were on the road. No one was injured although damage estimated at $1,000 was done to the vehicle. Duane D. Savre of Cooperstown drove the car, owned by his brother Raymond.

William Emmerich is the new president of the N.D. Watchmakers and Jewelers Association. He was elected at the association’s annual meeting in Mandan and will serve a one-year term.

McHenry’s girls’ basketball team lost a “heartbreaker” 36-34 to rival Grace City in the Blazers’ season opener. The Blazers had the edge through most of the game, leading at the quarters 12-7, 18-10 and 30-24, but Grace City rallied in the final frame for the victory.

September 28, 1998

It took all of Highway 36 and 281-52 to move a giant bull to a new location at Buchanan last week. The large wood animal, was built by the late Henry Luehr of Pettibone many years ago and stood at his home until son, Raymond moved it to the bar at Buchanan.

New Arrivals - Fernando Garcia, boy, born September 16, to Sandra and Alejandro Garcia, Texas, residents living in Carrington.

Connie and Troy Hafner, Sykeston, are the parents of a baby boy, Tanner Lee Hafner, born Sept. 19 at Carrington Health Center.

Braxton Timothy Hewitt was born Sept. 12, at Jamestown Hospital. Parents are Eric and Brenda Hewitt, Carrington.

Area Obituaries - Marcell Ames, 74, Carrington, formerly of Grace City. Vera V. Knuth, 90, New Rockford, formerly of Carrington. Leslie R. Wenzel, 78, New Rockford.

Hawksnest News - Carter and Kathe Kleinsasser spent the weekend in Brookings, S.D. where they attended the Sioux football game in which their son, Jim, played.

Brent Kurtz visited with Mike and Julie Kunz of Clear Lake, Minn., in Sykeston on Saturday evening.

Richard and Margaret Otto, Bowdon, were Monday visitors of the home of Rodney and Leona Magnuson, Richard helped Rodney chop corn.

Chaseley News - Jess and Lyndsey Roller visited grandma Elenora Hamann on Saturday. Dana Lausch visited grandma on Sunday.

Elenora accompanied Marge Pohlman to Carrington on Wednesday and they visited Esther Emerson in the nursing home.

The Chaseley church decided Sunday morning to have their annual ham and chicken supper again this fall on the first Wednesday in October.

Corey and LeAnne Hart were Sunday evening callers of the Lester Hansons and got tomatoes and cucumbers.

Brenda and Clyde Reimke of Harvey were Sunday visitors of Warren and Betty Hart and Corey and LeAnne Hart and family joined them for supper.
