From the Past: Chieftain Motor Lodge has new owners

75 Years Ago

October 14, 1948

Brig Gen. William A. Matheny of Carrington, serving with the U.S. Army Group in Greece, was awarded the decoration of Knight Commander of the Order of George I for “valuable and inestimable services to Greece and her Army.” The award was presented by King Paul at ceremonies held at the Royal Palace in Athens in the presence of American and Greek military and diplomatic leaders.

The state Homemakers council, representing Homemakers clubs in 52 counties, will hold its annual meeting at NDAC in Fargo Dec. 7 to 9. Mrs. Albert Rust Gladstone, is president of the group. The officers are vice president Mrs. John Fay, Rugby; secretary, Mrs. Arthur Hett, Alexander; and treasurer, Mrs. William Falconer, Hillsboro.

The breaks were in favor of Fessenden and as a result the Orioles took a 6 to 0 victory from the Carrington Cardinals in a conference football game on the Fessenden field last Friday night.

Foster County was represented by three girls at the state dress revue for 4-H girls at Valley City last week. They were Margaret Wright and Donna Lyman, Grace City Live Wires, and Norma Pedersen, Juanita Clever Stitchers.

Alfred L. Schafer, director of the convention office of the American National Red Cross and a former resident of Carrington, has retired from the service after 27 years, according to the organizational Midwestern area office in St. Louis. Retirement ceremonies were held September 30, at the national headquarters building in Washington, D.C., where he has been working.

School benefit dance sponsored by Wyard Schools 1 and 3 in Sykeston, was held Friday, Oct. 22. Music was by Stub Stern’s Orchestra.

October 17, 1973

Jud and Gen Tracy have announced the sale of the Chieftain Motor Lodge. The new owners are Chris and Betty Klein, who operated a farm and a ranch in the Brantford and Grace City areas of Foster County.

The congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington will observe its 40th anniversary at special services Sunday, Oct. 21. Eight pastors, including three “sons of the congregation” will participate in the morning worship service and an afternoon program of reminiscences.

New owners of Central Steel Building and Construction are Norman and LaVonne Wahlund, who purchased the business from Otto Klindworth. Wahlund had managed the business during the time Klindworh had operated it in connection with his seed and farm supply firm, about 15 years. Wahlund was associated with Klindworth 26 years.

The St. Paul Lutheran Church parish of Sykeston will mark two significant events in its history at its morning service Oct. 21. The congregation will observe their sixtieth anniversary with a special worship service and later will celebrate final payment on the church building with a mortgage burning ceremony.

The first victory of the season for the CHS girls basketball team came at the expense of Bowdon 32-28, in an overtime contest Oct. 9.

Basketball fortunes for the Grace City Pheasants, girls team, are going well as their record is now 5-2, according to Coach Larry Przynyclen.

McHenry defeated Tolna 59-23 in girls high school basketball Friday at Tolna. McHenry had quarter leads of 20-4, 28-9, and 51-13. It was McHenry’s third win with one loss this season.

Martin Lonski, Kensal, has been chosen a member of the Gold Star Marching Band at N.D. State University.

October 19, 1998

Grace City sunflower yields are looking strong with confectionary yields running in the 1,400 - 1,500 pound range, oils running about 1,800 pounds per acre according to Dahlgren Seed Co. manager Kent Johnson.

Three breakins at Grace City and two at Bowdon happened this weekend. In Grace City someone entered the Schoolhouse Café, missing was a telephone, 29 video rentals and food. At Dahlgreen Seed Co., $66.34 was taken from a steel cabinet, also missing were two portable radios and a battery charger. The Grace City Post Office had an AM-FM radio missing there. Over in Bowdon at the Bowdon School a stereo was stolen and at the Bowdon Café videos and cigarettes were taken.

Ellen and Charles Linderman visited with Democratic candidate for Public Service Commissioner Vern Thompson, on a campaign stop in Carrington Tuesday morning.

A crew from Hagel Construction was busy laying the concrete in the parking lot of the north side of the Sports Bar addition at the Chieftain last week.

A Cando man is in custody from last weeks high-speed chase. Duane Schaefer, 25, formerly from Carrington. The vehicle was spotted driving on lawns and attempting to over-take another vehicle while traveling up the overpass on Highway 281 north while reaching speeds of 50 mph. The car chase ended in Carrington, when the vehicle hit a curb just south of the police station.

Carrington Health Center purchased 24 jackets for the ambulance squad and a combination stretcher chair which is designed for small storage compartments that function well in confined areas like hallways and narrow landing stairways.

New Arrivals - Chance Allyn Brenno, born October 12 at the Carrington Health Center to Lori Stitzel and Jeff Brenno of New Rockford. Son, Jayden Troy was born to Troy and Jane Rosenau of Carrington on Sept. 15.

Marriages - Jean Christ and Ken Gross were married July 4, at the Ken Gross farm south of Carrington.

Obituaries - Alma B. Froelich, 93, formerly of Carrington, died October 7, 1998. Ellsworth Benson, 69, Sheyenne, died October 10, 1998. Ernest Leo Austin, 87, Sykeston died October 10, 1998. Lillian Davis, 81, Carrington, died October 11, 1998. Joe Taylor, 76, Carrington died October 10, 1998.

DeAnn Mack, Pingree-Buchanan-Kensal reached the 1,000 point mark in her high school basketball career during the Rebel-Bear game at Kensal.
