From the Past: Estabrook students new at Carrington

75 Years Ago

November 4, 1948

Barbara Craven, Carrington, was elected president of the eighth district Future Homemakers of America, when a district rally was held in Carrington last Saturday. There were 96 girls present from the schools of Jamestown, Wimbledon, Medina, Cooperstown, New Rockford and Carrington.

Soon to arrive at the farm of Lawrence Steinbach, a farmer of north of Barlow, will be the family of Boddian Ochockyj, displaced persons from Europe, who arrived in New York last Sunday. The family consists of the father, the mother and two children, Roman, age 1, and Katharina, age 7 months. The mother’s name is Marija.

Mrs. Forrest Daniel entertained the Sykeston Women’s Club in her home Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Elizabeth Lewis of Fessenden, Mrs. Rust and Mrs. Wm. Wagner were guests at this meeting. Betty Richter, who attended Girls State last summer, gave a report.

Patricia Sisco, who attends the Academy at New Rockford and her brother Jack, who is a high school student at Assumption Abbey, Richardton, N.D. left for their schools Monday evening after having been called home due to the death of their grandmother, Mrs. Garman.

Robert Reiland, Sykeston, has purchased the highway filling station from Johnnie Hammes and took over the business Monday.

Frank, Donald and Mrs. Earl Baumgartner and daughter Karen, and Roger Bischoff went to Park River Monday to spend the day at the Wm. Bischoff home. Little Freddy Baumgartener, who has been staying with the Bischoff family in Courtenay the past month, returned home with the visitors.

Mrs. Adam Hoffman, son Louie and Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Hoffman visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.A. Hoffman at Streeter over the weekend.

November 7, 1973

Construction is currently underway at the old Rainbow Gardens site as the Carrington housing project took a significant step forward last week.

Signatures were affixed to the final papers last week which made the start of construction possible. Representative from the Denver office of HUD (Housing and Urban Development) were on hand to authorize the signing of contracts by members of the Foster County Housing Authority and Carrington Homes, Inc. Considerable delay had preceded the signing as details of financing and design were worked out locally and in Denver.

Ten children got used to new surroundings at the Carrington Elementary School this week. They were the entire population of Estabrook School, which closed unexpectedly over the weekend.

Neill L. Lund, Carrington, is one of nine N.D. State University students who have received $250 scholarships from the Grain Terminal Foundation of St. Paul.

Paula Engstrom has been informed by Minot State College of her eligibility for nomination to Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, based on scholastic standing and number of credits.

Jill Topp and Michael Thompson were married Oct. 27, at a 7:30 p.m. service in Glenfield Lutheran Church. Pastor Dale Houck officiated at the double ring ceremony.

Pat Votava, Carrington, is a member of the cast of “Tom Jones,” Little Country Theatre production at N.D. State University.

Friends and relatives honored Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Johnson on their golden wedding anniversary at an open house held in the recreational center of Lazy Z Mobile Court at Vancouver, Wash.

November 9, 1998

Clarence Wolff is retiring from MDU just shy of 27 years with MDU. He has worked out of Carrington for the company since 1976.

John and Claire Holth’s farm is the winner of the Foster County Soil Achievement Award due to their conservation farming practices.

Laurie Lenz, director of the Dakota Kids Daycare in Carrington, received a donation recently from John Kienow, Alco manager. The $546 donation was made with the proceeds of the store’s annual Cute Baby Contest.

Ethyl Peasgood, who grew up in Sykeston was inducted into Jamestown College’s Hall of Fame. She graduated from Jamestown College in the early 1930s at the beginning of the Depression Era. After graduating, she taught a year in Heaton, N.D. and then moved to Alaska and taught in one room schoolhouses without running water. Throughout her teaching career Peasgood was named Alaska’s Teacher of the Year and has been honored by the Alaska State Legislature.

Sister Donna Jean Chaput is the new Carrington Health Center Social Ministries coordinator.

Area Obituaries - Michael Bickler, 69, Sheyenne, died October 28; Barbara Wollman, 89, Chaseley, died Friday, October 30; Hazeldean McCleery, 87, Carrington, died November 5.

Area births - Austin Michael Bourassa, Heaton born October 28 at the Carrington Health Center, parents are Gypsy Evans and Adam Bourassa.

Heidi Williams is among the 45 Moorhead State University students selected by audition for the university’s 1998-99 concert choir.

Midkota Mustangs crowned District 7 Girls’ Basketball champs in District 7 tournament .

Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary to Henry and Phyllis Gussiaas, November 15, 1998, and to Paul and Elsie Schroeder on November 19, 1998.

Carrington Youth Center presents “ANTZ” rated PG.
