Joan Chaney

Joan Chaney, 87, of Jamestown, N.D., passed away early Tuesday morning, October 24, 2023, at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, N.D.

Joan was born August 7, 1936, on the family farm west of Edmunds, N.D., the daughter of Charles and Mamie (Rue) Lutman. She attended high school in Jamestown where she also worked for a photographer for room and board.

After graduating from Jamestown High School, Joan moved to Chicago, Ill., where she worked. Isom Chaney followed Joan to Chicago after his service in the navy ended. They were married in 1956 and lived in Chicago and then Evanston for a few years.

The family moved to Jamestown, N.D., where Joan had since made her home. She sold Stanley Home Products, Aerus Electrolux and Watkins for many years, enjoying her professional relationships.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, and visiting with people at her garage sales. Joan especially loved her family and visiting with them and always looked forward to the annual family reunion in Edmunds.

Joan is survived by her son, Dennis Chaney; daughter, Terry (Bill) Toops; son, Derrick (Andrea) Chaney; grandchildren, Brian (Jessica) Toops, Michael (Teresa) Chaney, Dustin Chaney, Danielle (Zac) Zimmerman and Garrett Chaney; five great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Neil (Della) Lutman, Russell Lutman, LaVonne (Jim) Budd and Jenny Rundblad.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Isom Chaney; son, Doug Chaney; grandsons, Jason Toops and Tyson Chaney and siblings, Gerald Lutman, Darrell Lutman, Charles Lutman, Marian Ostrom, Phyllis Scheck, Roger Lutman and Merle Lutman.

Funeral service was at 10:30 a.m., Monday, October 30, 2023, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Rev. Tom Eckstein officiating. Visitation was one hour before the service at the church. Burial was at Edmunds Cemetery, Edmunds, N.D.

Arrangements are in the care of Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown.
