Carrington FFA excels at national convention

Twenty members of the Carrington FFA Chapter attended the 96th National FFA Convention held in Indianapolis, Indiana, November 1-4.

Members attended sessions, competed in three Career Development Events, explored the Expo, toured a local dairy and volunteered at the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

The Farm Business Management Team placed fourth and earned a gold team award. Team members included Bryan Harris, Joe Lindberg, Wyatt Neuman and Emma Hone. Individually, Bryan Harris was the ninth-place individual, earning a $400 cash award. Lindberg, Neuman and Hone were all gold individual winners. The team was coached by Joel Lemer.

The Farm Business Management event involved taking a three-hour individual test on financial statements, marketing, taxes, family living, and other aspects using a fictional farm resource packet. The team also completed a team activity analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of a farm and making recommendations for improvements.

The Ag. Communications Team placed ninth, earning a gold team award. Team members included Isabel Wendel, Sierra Friedt, Mercedes Lura and Molly Hansen. Individually, Isabel Wendel placed second, earning a $900 cash award. Friedt received a gold award, Lura a silver and Hansen a bronze. The team was coached by Missy Hansen, Mitchell Becker and Jessie Becker. The Ag. Communications event involved writing a communications proposal promoting an alumni or supporter from North Dakota. The team chose Fred Bakk, a donor that helped start the North Dakota FFA Foundation.

The team made a presentation of their proposal to judges. Individually, they completed practicums including writing an opinion piece, press release, designed a webpage and edited a video after watching a press conference. They also completed a communication and editing quiz.

The Horse Judging Team placed seventeenth, earning a silver team award. Team members included Baylee Lura, Jaedyn Lura, Jozey Retzlaff, and Ashley Lindberg. Individually, Baylee Lura placed thirteenth, earning a gold award. Jaedyn Lura, Retzlaff and Lindberg all received silver awards. The team was coached by Missy Hansen.

The Horse Judging event included placing eight halter and performance classes, presenting four sets of oral reasons and a written test on horse breeds and tack. The team also completed four practicums and a team presentation by working collaboratively.

In addition to those competing on the teams, Kylie Skadberg, Emma Aberle, Izzy Neuman, Abby Lee, Bailey Ness, Gabe Ricter, Jacob Hinrichs, and Brekka Kuss also attended the convention.

The group was chaperoned by Mrs. Janelle Helm, Carrington Public School Superintendent, and Joel and Linda Lemer.
