Griggs/Midkota got off to a 2-1 start to the girls' basketball season, taking fifth place and the consolation championship at the Lake Region Invitational in Devils Lake Thursday-Saturday, November 30-December 2.
The Titans got things going with the first game of the tournament on Thursday, as they faced off with the Devils Lake junior varsity team.
At one point in the second half, G-M enjoyed a 10-point lead at 35-25, but the young Firebird girls would keep chipping away and eventually sending the Titans to a disappointing 46-43 loss.
Now in the consolation bracket, the Titans took on Nelson County. Things went considerably more smoothly in the Friday game, as G-M won going away, 46-19.
Fifth place action pitted Coach Mike Monson's squad opposite Park River/Fordville-Lankin on Saturday afternoon, and the Titans squeaked out a five-point win, 41-36, to take consolation honors.
The Firebird JV would go on to win the tournament, defeating Benson County by a final score of 60-50 for the championship.
G-M's next action is this Tuesday in Glenfield, when they entertain the M-P-B Thunder in a matchup of local rivals. On Thursday, the Titans travel southwest for another former Region 3 opponent, Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter, in Napoleon.
