From the Past: Carr's Launderette opened Thursday

75 Years Ago

January 13, 1949

Election of officers took place at the regular monthly meeting of the Carrington volunteer fire department Monday evening.

C.W. Yoder was re-elected assistant chief of the department. Russell Schutt was elected to succeed Joe Polries as secretary-treasurer, Martin Hjelseth was re-elected trustee for a three year term.

F.K. Wheeler serves as chief of the department through appointment by the city mayor. He began a two-year term in 1948. Recently elected officers were installed in the Odd Fellows Lodge the past week. The list follows:

The Carrington Cardinals defeated Minnewaukan 38-4 for their third conference victory of the season here Tuesday night. From the outset there was no doubt about the outcome as Carrington jumped into a lead and was never threatened.

Election of officers was the main business of the evening when the firemen held their regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, E.L. Larson was elected chief; Ben Bickelson, assistant chief and also captain of the engine company; August Bartkowski, secretary treasurer and captain of the hose squadron; Wm. Mickelson, captain of the chemical and H.C. Hidley, captain of the hook and ladder company.

Miss Alice Frappier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Frappier of McHenry, became the bride of Stanley Feland of Westhope, N.D., on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at 11 o’clock at a double ring ceremony in St. Peter and Paul Catholic church in McHenry.

50 Years Ago

January 9, 1974

Carrington’s latest addition to the business community, Carr’s Launderette, opened without fanfare last week. Mr. and Mrs. Mike Carr opened the doors on the new coin laundry facility Thursday following completion of the major installations.

The new business is located a block off Main Street at the corner of Eighth Avenue and First Street South.

Carrington’s Production Credit Association office has announced changes in its management personnel. Manager Gordon Foss has departed for Marshall, Minn. He has been replaced by Curt Christopherson, who was previously loan officer at the local office.

The new loan officer is Terry Huseth, who is originally from McLeod, N.D. and a NDSU graduate.

A backfiring snowmobile resulted in the loss of a 36 x 100 barn at the Maurice Zink farm near Edmunds Thursday afternoon. The wooden barn burned to its foundation as firemen from Kensal and Carrington were able only to prevent spread of the blaze in the sub-zero temperatures.

Cindy Shaubert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daryl (Bobby) Schaubert of Heaton, has been selected as a member of the 1974 International Music Camp European Tour Choir.

Connie Dee Graham, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Graham, and Jim House, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas House, all of Grace City, were married in a double-ring, candlelight service Dec. 21 in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, McHenry.

Mr. and Mrs. Russell Otto of Grace City announce the engagement of their daughter, Kathy, to Marc Halvorson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Selmer Halvorson of Tolna.

January 11, 1999

Alex and Mryna Friedt are the proud parents of Carrington Health Center’s first baby of 1999. Born Jan. 3, little Sage Mattea was awarded a basketful of goodies by area businesses.

A Grace City native now farming in Brazil will speak at a farm magazine sponsored seminar in Chicago later this month. Todd Topp, 31, is creating a 21st century homesteaders’ experience on what is being called a “new frontier” on a vast savanna plain in the South American country.

Bernadine Anderson and Lea Dell received awards for 30 years of service on Dec. 12, at the annual Carrington Health Center Christmas gathering.

Chad Wiesenberger, an electrician and maintenance employee at Dakota Growers was voted employee of the month for November.

Area births - Joseph C. Alberts III was born January 4, at Carrington Health Center to Anne Left Bear and Joseph Aljets, Tokio. He weighted 9 pounds.

Obituaries - John K. Williams, 93, New Rockford; Richard Pfeiffer, 65, California, formerly of Carrington; Anna Stedman, 80, Carrington.

Area News -

CHC Long-Term Care - Kellie Speidel, Joy Zeltinger and children visited Theresa Schaack. Edna Neumiller visited Dorothy Retzlaff. Dorothy Briss and Donna Briss of Jamestown took their mother and grandmother, Anna out for supper. Thank you Judy Cudworth for playing the organ for us.

Glenfield - Janice, Dale and Rindy Munson were luncheon guests of Ninie and Maurice Brandvold on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Black were luncheon guests of her mother, Clarice Somerville on Sunday.

Jon and Sherry Johnson spent a few days at Mayville visiting Torry, Makenzie and Makayla Ruetter. On Friday, all went to Northwood to spend a few days visiting Paul, Tawnia, Alex and Amber Miller.

Nordmore - Edwin Gussiaas left on Thursday morning accompanied by Lowell Medhus and Michael of Hardin, Montana back to Montana, to spend the Christmas holiday with his daughter and family.

Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Gussiaas, Katie and Kirk were Christmas Eve guests at the Donnie and Peggy Bickett home in Carrington.

The Nordmore Neighbor Homemakers met at John’s Country House for their annual Christmas party on Dec. 21. They had a gift exchange also.

The cast and crew of the Carrington One-Act Team advances to state with their production of “Something’s Rotten in the State of Denmark” merited honorable mention for Micah Frost and Josh Jamison.
