CHS scheduled to appeal Division A status for boys basketball

Representatives from Carrington Public Schools will make a petition to the North Dakota High School Activities Association (NDHSAA) regarding the boys basketball program’s present alignment in Division A.

The appeal will be presented at the NDHSAA’s Basketball Classification Committee meeting on Tuesday, January 16, at 1 p.m. at the governing body’s offices in Valley City.

Carrington’s case will be the first of four heard by the committee, followed by appeals for the Hillsboro/Central Valley girls, Four Winds-Minnewaukan girls, and Grand Forks Central girls.

The first three schools wish to return to Division B status for their respective basketball programs, while Central aims to be placed in Division A, down from AA.

In her report prepared on Thursday, January 11, CPS Superintendent Janelle Helm stated that several factors are under consideration for the program’s grievance.

“Competitive history and balance, geography, [the] school’s enrollment trend, student participation rate, socioeconomic factors of the school’s population, and any additional information unique to school community,” Helm wrote.

CHS Athletic Director Karla Michaelson, along with High School Principal Connor Weber and boys’ basketball Coach Jason Otto, wrote the appeal.

Michaelson and Otto will be in attendance at the NDHSAA hearing to present their case.

At this time, any reclassification to Division B for the Carrington girls program has not been explored or considered.

The Cardinals are currently in Division A, Region 2 for both boys and girls basketball, along with Devils Lake, FW-M, Grafton, HCV and Thompson.
