From the Past: Pony donated to Dakota Boys Ranch

75 Years Ago

January 27, 1949

In session here Tuesday night, the Tri-County Medical Society elected officers and attended to other business of the organization. Elected president of the group was Dr. W.C. Vogelwede of Carrington, Dr. P.A. Boyum of Harvey is vice president, Dr. D.W. Matthal of Fessenden secretary-treasurer, Dr. R.F. Gilliand of Carrington delegate, Dr. C.G. Owens of New Rockford alternate delegate and Dr. E.J. Schwinghammer of New Rockford counselor.

Richard Dale was elected president of the Trinity Lutheran Men’s Club when the annual business meeting of the club was held Tuesday evening. He succeeds H.O. Beck, president, to succeed Russell Schutt and Charles Eide secretary and Dr. O.B. Smebak treasurer. Eide succeeds Carlton Ellison as secretary and Smebak succeeds J.L. Sparrow as treasurer.

George Engstrom, manager of the Buchanan Hotel, was elected president of the Foster County Chapter of the Wildlife Federation when the annual business meeting of the organization was held Tuesday evening Engstrom succeeds C.W. Yoder. Other officers elected were Peter Edinger, vice president to succeed C.L. Vreeland and Russell Schutt, secretary, re-elected.

Recent births of Carrington Hospital include: Jan. 20, girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Mansel Watne; Jan. 22, a girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dale Aljets; Jan. 25, a boy was born to Mr and Mrs. Kenneth Bremer, Jamestown.

Miss Hazel Linderman, daughter of Mrs. Charles B. Linderman of Carrington, became the bride of Walter A. Beckman of Ypsilanti, N.D., in the Little Church of the Flowers, Glendale, Calif., on January 20. Dr. Carl Lambert officiated.

50 Years Ago

January 23, 1974

Robert Forbes, manager of Gate City Savings and Loan, Carrington, was elected assistant vice president of the association during its annual meeting Jan. 15 in Fargo.

Boys at Dakota Boys Ranch near Minot are enjoying a beautiful Shetland pony, Dolly, given to them by the William Eli family of Glenfield. Their father said the Eli children had outgrown the little horse, now 11 years old. The pony belonged to Kathern, Theodore and Florence.

New Standard Oil agent in Carrington is Plus Koch, who has lived here with his family from Flasher, where he was employed eight years with Standard.

WAC Pvt. Dolores A. Grosser of Carrington completed with honors a six weeks medical records and reports course at the Academy of Health Sciences of the Army, Ft. Sam Houston, Texas.

Patricia Votava of Carrington is a cast member for the next N.D. State University Little Country Theatre production, “As You Like It.” Pat is daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Votava.

Teri Hamann and David Lausch were united in marriage Dec. 21, in a candlelight service at the United Methodist Church in Chaseley with Rev. Robert Logan officiating at the double ring ceremony.

Sharla J. Landon was joined in marriage to Stephen D. O’Connor on Jan. 2 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Falls Church, Va.. Mr. O’Connor, son of Mr. and Mrs. David E. O’Connor, Houston, Texas, is presently stationed in Norfolk, Va. In the Navy.

Mrs. Charles Holth was hostess at a birthday party Thursday to celebrate the first birthday of son, Matthew. Guests were Mrs. Duane Lura and Brenda and Mr. Douglas Schmid and Christopher.

January 25, 1999

Chieftain has opened a new sports bar as of last week. The new sports bar features eleven large screen televisions sets throughout the lounge and local and area sports memorabilia attached to the walls. The lounge has seating facilities for 150. The facility also offers gaming, pool tables, video games and dart machines as well as a DMX satellite sound system.

The building previously empty on Main Street has become the site of an artistic endeavor - the signs and specialties of Audrey Kuntz and Marlin Meyers. Meyers Signs and Specialties is offering “anything from bumper stickers to backlit signs,” Kuntz says. They are located at 1037 West Main (former Tae Kwon Do building).

North Dakotans now have a new electronic option available for filing their state individual income taxes. Tax Commissioner Rick Clayburgh recently announced the availability of Federal/State Electronic Tax Filing.

Art Education plays an essential role in strengthening academic achievement, and building a culture of learning. Mrs. Janice Harildstad, a fifth grade teacher at Carrington Elementary, applied for and was awarded $173, from the North Dakota Council on the Arts through a Teacher Incentive. This grant provides funds for her to integrate art into social studies through plays of Historical events.

A break-in occurred at a rural church in Foster County. New Life Fellowship Church, located about three miles south of Hamar, was discovered by Pastor Jeff Kapelle, missing was a copy machine, microwave, an office chair, and a borrowed sound system.

Area news - Bordulac - Sad news was received of the death of Andy Carr. He was 39 years old. He is the son of Virginia Carr and the late Maurice Carr.

Lois Beckley called her aunt Helen Mehring and wished her a happy birthday. Helen is 86 years old.

Percy Beckley visited O.W. Ihringer on Monday evening. Ole enjoyed his visit with Percy.

Lucille Liebig’s daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Frost of South Dakota and daughter Emilee, visited.

Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Johns of Bismarck visited Saturday with Lisa and Dan Beckley and family.
