The Carrington Cardinals got their Division A, Region 2 doubleheader on Thursday, January 18, rolling with a 36-point win in the girls' game over the Grafton Spoilers, 59-23.
After that, the visitors were in no mood to play around, and the fourth-ranked Spoiler boys exacted the frustrations of their first loss of the season to Devils Lake in the previous game on the Cards, in a 91-34 defeat in the nightcap.
In game one, CHS played perhaps their best defensive effort of the season, holding Grafton to 14 points in the first half and just nine in the second.
Madison Johnson led Carrington with 13 points, and Edyn Hoornaert and Olivia Threadgold added 10 points apiece.
Johnson was both the top rebounder and assist distributor with nine and seven for those stats, and Isabel Wendel picked off six steals and Johnson four in the game.
For the Grafton girls, Addison Fredericksen had 10 points, and Savannah Blackcloud finished with nine. The two had all but four points of the Spoilers' offensive showing.
The boys contest followed, and GHS showed off their height, quickness and smooth shooting in rolling to a 27-point first quarter. Up 45-22 at the break, Grafton kicked it up another notch with 31 points in the third.
Five Spoilers scored in double figures, led by 21 points from Braylon Baldwin. Ryan Hanson scored 14, Tony Villarreal 12, and Kyler Droog and Reggie Rice both accounted for 11 for Grafton (9-1).
Six different players hit threes in the game, and four had two each. The Spoilers made 35 field goals, and were also efficient from the line by going 11-for-14.
The bright spot for the Cards was the play of junior guard Josh Bickett, as he ended up with a 16-point night and two treys.
On the rare occasions when Carrington got to the line, they did not capitalize, going 0-for-4.
