From the Past: McHenry to celebrate 75th anniversary

75 Years Ago

April 21, 1949

Mr. and Mrs. Math Hockert, Eastman Township farm couple, will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, April 24, and are inviting their friends and neighbors to an open house during the afternoon and evening. The Hockert farm is located 10 ½ miles northeast of Kensal.

Mrs. John Jeske was one of 25 winners of a Westinghouse automatic toaster in the fourth week of the Red Owl’s “name the Red Owl and rhyme it” contest.

No one has said there is oil beneath the soil of Foster County. Perhaps no one knows. Only facts known are that oil companies have representatives in Foster County today who are buying leases on farm property and they are scurrying all over the state signing up option-leases on real estate.

Omar E Bonderud of Carrington will become vice-president of the student body at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, next fall as the result of student elections held there recently.

Carrington High School will be represented by 81 students at the district music festival at Devils Lake, Friday, it was stated this week by O.T. Belsheim, high school music director. The participants from here will include the high school choir, the band, the glee clubs, small groups and soloists.

Rev. Hans Thorson of Minneapolis conducted Easter service in Kvernes Lutheran Church Sunday afternoon. Baptismal services were held for Ranae Jean, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Huff of Carrington. Sponsors were Mr. and Mrs. A.K. Gussiaas, Elma Edwardson and Eugene Edwardson.

Easter Sunday, April 17, 1949, was the day chosen by Harriet Joann Neil, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ervin L. Neil, Carrington, and Gerald H. Pierson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Algot Pierson, Carrington, for their wedding day.

50 Years Ago

April 17, 1974

The enthusiasm is growing as McHenry people are getting ready to celebrate the community’s 75th anniversary this summer. McHenry has set aside two days, June 21-22 , for the celebration. The town was established in 1899 on an extension of the Northern Pacific Railroad.

TV sportscaster Rog Higgins will be guest speaker at the Carrington High School athletic banquet Saturday.

Carrington city will finalize plans to proceed with an extensive paving and resealing project Monday, April 22. Bids from paving contractors will be opened at 7 p.m.

Art Perleberg of Carrington has been appointed chairman for Red Cross Project SSI-ALERT in Foster County.

Keith E. Kosse of Carrington has been working in electro microscopy at N.D. State University under the federally funded People Employment Project. He is son of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kosse.

The annual Foster County Spelling Bee was held at the Carrington Armory April 10.

Trophies were awarded to the following winners; county champion - Brent Gudmundson, Carrington; county runner-up, Paula Seltz, Bordulac, Brent and Paula will represent Foster County at the state spelling bee in Bismarck May 2.

Other trophy winners were fifth grade champion - Curtis Twedt, McHenry; sixth grade champion - Janet Dell, Carrington; seventh grade champion - Michelene Liddle, Carrington and eighth grade champion - Gudmundson.

Former Pingree High School standout, Darcy Zink was honored at the annual Jamestown College athletic banquet. He received his fourth basketball letter and third baseball letter.

25 Years Ago

April 19, 1999

A detailed presentation on the proposed 18-hole golf course highlighted the Carrington City Council meeting Monday, April 12. Several grants are pending to help fund the project. Local fund drives have also been initiated for the course.

A North Central Accreditation visitation team toured the Carrington Public Schools last week as part of an ongoing process to help the school in its plans for continued improvement. Co-chairs Renae Klein and Lori Cook were the delegates to visit with the visiting team.

Sykeston Lake Hiawatha will be stocked with yellow perch and baby pike this spring. North Dakota Game and Fish hope that stocking the lake will increase recreational activities.

Greg Specht is the new mechanic on duty at Central City Service on Main Street, Carrington. Specht will run his own, independent automotive repair business in the shop owned by Doug Stokes. Stokes will still operate the service side of the business, doing oil changes and other service work in addition to his custom auto detailing and carpet cleaning work.

Carrington Health Center will be honoring their many volunteers with a luncheon Tuesday, April 20. Volunteer coordinator Dorothy Fenske said the 1998 volunteer of the Year is Jan Hart and Lori Hagel was chosen for the honorary membership to the Hospital Auxilary

New arrivals - boy, Jarret Rae, was born Monday, April 12 at Carrington Health Center to Jodi and Marty Bauer of Carrington. He weighed 9 pounds, 3.6 ounces; A girl, Victoria Claire, was born Tuesday, April 13 at Carrington Health Center to Veronica and Jason Vollmer of Grace City. She weighed 8 pounds, 7 ounces.

Obituaries - Carol Helm, 87, Carrington died Friday, April 9; Elmer Silkey, 85, Carrington died Wednesday, April 7; Esther Manly, 85, Moorehead (formerly of New Rockford) died Tuesday, April 13; Dorothy A. Aljets, 77, Carrington died Thursday, April 15; Janet Norden, 91, of Carrington, died Monday, April 12.
