From the Past: Kleinsasser's football jersey retired

75 Years Ago

April 28, 1949

Keith Kahl, a graduate of Carrington High School and for the past several months an employee in the post office, has received an appointment to West Point Military Academy and will report there, next July 1. He is a son of Charles Kahl, Carrington.

The body of the late Pfc. Floyd Fousek, one of the World War II dead, was due to arrive at the Knott Funeral Home, Carrington, on Wednesday to await funeral and burial services. Pfc. Fousek, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Fousek, Kensal, died in the Pacific area.

At the annual convention of the State Assoc. of Master Plumbers held this week in Fargo, C.A. Trullinger of Carrington was elected vice-president and member of the board of directors.

Donald Hess was elected president of the Carrington Parent-Teachers Association. He succeeds Herman Kraus, who held the position for two years.

Mrs. Harry Linderman was elected vice president, Mrs. Harvey Sletten secretary and Mrs. Wilfred Meyer treasurer.

Carrington’s senior baseball team will be a member of the Tri-County league in the 1949 season, having been accepted for membership at a league meeting held last Thurs. night at Maddock. Other towns with teams in the league are Sheyenne, Bremen, Leeds, York, Maddock, Minnewaukan, Esmond, New Rockford and Harvey.

Mrs. T.H. Cousins, Sr., pioneer resident of N.D. passed away Monday, April 25, in Carrington at the age of 82 years and seven months. A semi-invalid this past winter, Mrs. Cousins suffered a stroke at her home on Friday from which she never regained consciousness.

The annual convention of Foster Co.’s Young Citizen’s League, an organization whose purpose is to put into practice democratic procedures of government, was held Monday, April 26, in the Carrington High School gymnasium. The meeting was called to order by president Illa White, who gave a short address of welcome and introduced other officers: Roger Schmid, Barlow, secretary and Arnold Schroeder, Rose Hill No. 1 vice-president.

April 24, 1974

Two Carrington policemen, David Alger and Daniel Vetsch, have resigned from the department, according to Chief of Police Ervin Nicholson. Both men’s resignations were effective last week.

Carrington will be host this weekend to a statewide convention, which will be attended by national association officers and the state’s two U.S. Senators.

The convening group is North Dakota State Association of Letter Carriers and the Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Jerry DeBolt and CHS senior Craig Penas were awarded special honors at the Carrington High School annual athletic banquet Saturday evening. DeBolt was made a member of the Honorary C Club, a select group of local sports boosters. Penas was named the Senior Athlete of the Year. Both recipients were choices of the CHS letter winners.

Two Carrington students at State School of Science have accepted employment. John T. Reichert, who was enrolled in architectural drafting and estimating will be employed as a draftsman and estimator at Metro Metals, Minneapolis. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Reichert.

Michael P. Fandrich will work as a surveyor for K.B. MacKichan and Associated, Inc. Grand Forks. He was enrolled in civil engineering technology. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ted Fandrich.

April 26, 1999

Soon-to-be Minnesota Viking Jim Kleinsasser spent a great deal of time signing autographs for CHS athletes and fans following the annual Athletic Banquet here April 16. Kleinsasser also had his CHS football jersey retired at the banquet and was chosen by the Vikings in the NFL draft the following day.

Jim Kleinsasser may always be known as “Sheri’s Little Brother.” Sheri was celebrating with him on the night he was drafted to the Minnesota Vikings, said this was her happiest day in sports - even including her own UND basketball career.

Avoiding future lightning problems was discussed when the Foster County Commission met in regular session April 20. Lightning struck the courthouse during a storm Tuesday, April 13, knocking out the computer hard drive in the Social Services office. Also damaged in the strike was the Sheriff’s office teletype, also several telephones and an elevator sensor were damaged.

Representing a total of 73 years of employment with Foster County, these three former employees were honored April 15 with an appreciation day at the Courthouse. Bernard Beach, Dale Schindler and Dorothy Peterson.

Area Engagements - Vincent and Sandra Nicolai of New Rockford are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Maria Nicolai, to Gabe Gielzen, son of Russell and Ahn Gielzen, Glen Ullin.

Pam Stabenow and Steve Copenhaver announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage. Their parents are Gary and Betty Stabenow, Leeds, and Stanley and Genevieve Copenhaver, Carrington.

Area Obituaries: Margaret Hoppe, 84, Carrington, died Sunday, April 18 at Golden Acres Manor. Edna Midgley, 92, Cooperstown, formerly of McHenry, died Tuesday, April 20.

Toni Schmid won first place in the Student Originals editorial cartoon contest sponsored by the Fargo Forum. She and her family were honored at the Fargo Holiday Inn.
