From the Past: Carrington swim team defeats Valley City

75 Years Ago

August 25, 1949

Carrington JCC baseball team closed the season at Valley City last Wednesday night, defeating the Eagles there under lights 12 to 9. Martin and Dell were pitchers for Carrington and Sobolik catcher.

A special feature at the Foster County Fair this year will be the judging of the VFW Cootie Whisker Club, and appropriate prizes are to be awarded. Winners will include the Cootie with the most artistic whiskers, the most complete, the blackest and the poorest. The judging will take place in the big tent Wednesday evening.

In the city golf tournament, completed on the local course Sunday, William A. Kunkel was championship winner, defeating H.M. Knott in the 18th hole match.

In a recent business transaction, Leslie Footitt and Edwood Suckut formed a partnership for the operation of the meat department in the Super Valu store in Carrington.

Officers for the coming year were elected when the Dover Community Club met at the home of Mrs. James Wenstrom last Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Eldon Laughlin was elected president, Mrs. Wilfred Berg, vice president, and Mrs. Robert Montgomery secretary-treasurer.

Mrs. Leamon Duckworth, Mrs. James Watson Jr., Mrs. Bernard Walicski and Miss Ruth Watson were hostesses at a bridal shower for Miss Dorothy Watson last Tuesday afternoon at the Bill Watson home.

Sunday dinner guests in Sykeston at the John Wagners were the Roberts family, Mr. and Mrs. A. Niccum of Carrington, and Miss Beatrice and Homer Grove of Bordulac. This group, the John Wagner family and the Zala Danielses attended a family picnic at the Garret Jones home at Bowdon Sunday afternoon.

John Jacobson and family and Mrs. Zach Posey and Lottie had Sunday dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Wilford Johnson, Glenfield.

August 21, 1974

One new faculty member has been hired for the 1974-75 school term at Sykeston Public School; he is Rodney Garland who will teach business education, physical ed, and driver’s ed. Paul Neumiller will be custodian. Mrs. Paul Neumiller will be hot lunch cook, assisted by Mrs. Hanson.

Dr. Mohammed Said (Saheed) will soon be practicing in Carrington. He has been in Canada the last five years. He came to Carrington earlier this summer to meet some of the townspeople and look over the area. He is unmarried.

A Montgomery Ward catalog store will be open downtown Carrington August 29. The store will be owned by Mr. and Mrs. Duane Mahin, and Mrs. Mahin will be the operator. He is employed at Carrington by Otter Tail Power Company.

Rudy Hanson, principal of Carrington High School, won the annual Carrington Golf Club tournament Sunday, defeating a recent CHS graduate, Doug Bergan, in a playoff. Both had 116 for three rounds.

The Carrington swim team defeated Valley City 111-44 in a dual meet and competed in an invitational in Fargo, where Susan Zink placed third in the 100-meter breaststroke, Rodney Elkin placed fifth in the 50 meter butterfly, and the relay team placed fifth and sixth in the 200-meter medley and 200-meter freestyle. The relay team consists of Theresa Zink, Evelyn Kahl, Julie Elken and Brenda Gudmundson.

Joseph Lessner, age 83, formerly of Sykeston and New Rockford, died August 18 at St. Alexius Hospital at Bismarck after a brief illness.

Mrs. Walter (Annie) Black, 88, Grace City, died August 22 at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd in New Rockford.

John Gardner, former AgGrow Oils president and general manager, has accepted a position with the agriculture department of the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Matthew Anderson of Carrington has been selected as a national finalist for the National FFA Proficiency Award in the Equine Science - Entrepreneurship area. Matthew is one of only four people chosen to compete for this award at the national finals. The proficiency awards recognize outstanding student achievement in agribusiness gained through establishment of a new business, working for an existing company or otherwise gaining hands-on career experience.

Joel Lemer has been nominated to receive the organization’s Honorary American FFA Degree. The degree is the highest national honorary award presented by the FFA and recognizes those who greatly contribute to the advancement of agricultural education and provide outstanding service to their local program and community.

Pvt. Reyaldo Rodriguez has arrived at Fort Benning, Columbus, GA., to complete basic military training. The 1999 Pingree High School graduate is the son of Dale and Debra Gallagher, rural Pingree.

New Arrivals - Trey Robert, son of Scott and Peggy Balvitsch, Glenfield weighed 8 pounds, 1.4 ounces.

Obituaries - Mary K. White, 92 Carrington died Tuesday, August 24; Kenneth L. Prosser, 68, Sykeston, died Saturday, August 21; Lillian M. Fuhrman, 82, St. George, Utah (formerly of Carrington), died Wednesday, August 18.

Kathe Kleinsasser’s mother and stepdad, Martha and Ray Paasch, Belfield, and Kathe’s brother and wife, Dennis and Kathy Porter, New Salem, arrived Tuesday to visit at the home of Kathe and Carter. They were overnight guests and left for their homes on Wednesday.,

Shelly and Brent Kurtz met Wes and Camy Johnson of Washburn, and they attended a Sammy Hagar concert in Bismarck together.

Leona Magnuson was among those who attended the benefit picnic supper and white elephant sale to help raise money for the city park. The funds were matched by A.A.L.
