L/E/M ends HWC girls' season

The Langdon/Edmore/Munich girls basketball team wasted little time in eliminating the Harvey-Wells County Hornets in the Region 4 Girls Basketball Tournament held Monday, February 21 at the Devils Lake Sports Center.

Three-point plays were in abundance in the first quarter for the Cardinals, as Jaya Henderson hit two and Jalynn Swanson connected on another. Morgan Freije tallied an old-fashioned 3-pointer and Swanson just missed a free throw to add another as L/E/M jumped out on the Hornets, 22-5, after one.

HWC played much better in the second quarter, with four Hornets finding the scorebook. Henderson added her third trey of the night and Freije scored five as the Cardinals led, 35-14, at half.

The Cardinal defense stepped it up a few notches in the second half, holding HWC to just three points in each of the third and fourth quarters. Five players scored for L/E/M in the third, as they went on for the 53-21 victory.

The Hornets struggled from the field, connecting on just four field goals, and had 12 free-throws in the game.

Leading the way for the victors was Henderson, who scored 15. Freije was also in doubles with 10 points.

Lexi Fike led the Hornets with 10 points.

The loss ends the HWC girls’ season at 8-15, while L/E/M improved their record to 17-3 and advanced to last Tuesday’s semifinal round against Dunseith.
