Cards falter late, upset bid foiled

They may not have been your father's dominant Linton-HMB Lions of old, but when the postseason comes around, the switch instantly flickers to life for the traditional south-central state power.

Like the soon-to-depart "Coach K" at Duke, longtime Coach Dan Carr has built a 40-plus year cachet of excellence with three state championships, and 12 regional crowns.

This year's young Lion team took Carrington's best shot for the better part of three quarters, and made the plays, defensive stops and foul shots down the stretch to put an end to the Cards' 2022 campaign, 53-49, in the Region 3 Tournament first round Monday, March 7 in Jamestown.

"It came down to a few possessions," Head Coach Tim Ranum said. "We did a lot of things well and won a lot of the statistical categories, but it just came down to them hitting a few big buckets consecutively in the fourth quarter to pull away. Ultimately, it was a hard-fought game, and a good experience."

With the loss, CHS finished at 11-12, but improved by four wins over the previous season.

Carrington came out with a passion in the first quarter, getting out to as much as a 13-5 lead and holding a five-point advantage after eight minutes elapsed.

The game stayed close at the half, as the Lions trimmed the Cards' lead to three at the break and down to two at the end of three.

In that first half, Carrington severely limited second-chance opportunities for the Lions with a jaw-dropping 21-6 rebounding edge.

Even with that, CHS still maintained a slim lead.

"We missed some good looks, especially in that first half, that maybe would have helped us pull away a little bit," Ranum said.

The Lions must have had their deficiencies on the boards explained to them at the half. From the third quarter on, Linton-HMB outboarded the Cards, 22-7.

Corresponding with that, 6'3" junior forward Grant Bosch of the Lions went off, scoring 13 of his game-high 23 points in the second half and securing 10 of those rebounds for the game.

Trace King also had some key buckets down the stretch for Linton-HMB (13-8), with all seven of his points in the second half, and Jace Jochim finished with a 14-point evening. King added four assists and tied with Bosch for team honors in steals with three.

The loss ended the roundball career of senior guard Lucas Hendrickson, who finished a stellar final campaign with the Cardinal red and white with 15 points, four rebounds and three assists.

On his floor leader, Ranum said, "He really emerged as a dynamic offensive force, and we just switched up some schemes defensively and offensively, and started to form an identity."

Junior forward Hudson Schmitz kept the Cards in it with 11 points and nine rebounds, and freshman Josh Bickett hit for nine points, including two threes.

"The Hudsons [Schmitz and Topp] did a great job of rebounding and controlling the paint. Hudson Schmitz grew a little offensively for us, and we're hoping he can build on that into next year."

Bickett, along with senior Tate Larsen, hit three-balls late to get the Cards within a possession in the waning seconds, but the Lions sealed the deal with several free-throws with time running out.

The Cards lose five seniors, those being All-District 5 selection Hendrickson, Larsen, and reserves Noah Paulson, Cole Seaburg and Jacob Seaburg.

"I'm excited for the group of returners we have, but it will be difficult to replace Lucas and the other seniors not only statistically, but with their leadership throughout the years."
