American Legion Auxiliary honors veterans with contest, poppies

Every year the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors a Poppy Poster Contest which is open to Carrington School students. The purpose of the poster is to create an awareness of the dedication/sacrifice our soldiers have made to our country and to honor them for their service.

Poppy posters that local children created for this contest are on display at Leevers Foods in Carrington.

As a background in history, did you know that in 1920 the American Legion adopted the poppy as their official memorial flower? The four petals of the poppy represent Dedication, Sacrifice, Responsibility and Compassion. They also requested Congress to designate a National Poppy Day in our country, which they did, the Friday before Memorial Day.

Each year before Memorial Day, members of The American Legion Auxiliary distribute poppies with a request that the person receiving the flower make a

donation to support the future of veterans, active-duty military personnel and their families with medical and financial needs.

This year in Carrington a hundred posters with poppies attached to them were distributed to local businesses, and every single business contributed!
